Hi all,

Today Godhood releases in 1.0. A happy day for us! However this post is about a sad note. In coordination with GOG we decided to remove Linux and Mac support as advertised on the store page. However the installers for those platforms will still be available, and will even be updated with new versions of the game. This ambiguous situation requires some clarification.

Our studio Abbey Games has always worked with some version of our own tech. Godhood is created in AbbeyCore, an engine that we built from the ground up for many reasons. Among others, to support cross-platform development and offer native support for Linux and Mac. This was possible because part of our studio had the deep expertise required for this. As you may have read in this post, we had to downsize following the mixed reception of Godhood's initial version (the game grew a lot in the 12 months fortunately). We now no longer have the in-house talent to guarantee a working Linux and Mac version for every customer. Specifically this means that some Mac users might never get their driver issues fixed, and Linux users might not see continued support for OS updates or existing dependency issues. While we haven't diminished the existing support for these platforms in the past months, and are still updating binaries, we just want to be as frank as possible about the situation to avoid misleading customers.

Just to be clear, mostly every Mac and Linux user who owns the game, will still be able to play it, with the minimum specs below. However if you experience any driver-related issues, we cannot guarantee support, and we suggest to opt for a refund.

We're really unhappy that we can't deliver the cross-platform support we set out to when we started creating Godhood. Unfortunately our resources are limited and all we can do from here is to be transparent.

I hope that everyone who can will still enjoy the game! We've worked non-stop on it for the past 12 months, and you'll see it has grown a lot from it's first 'In Development' version. More news on that around launch.

Minimum specs

System: MacOS 10.13
Processor: Intel i3 3.0 GHz
Memory: 4 GB RAM
Graphics: Intel HD 4000
Storage: 1 GB available space
Other: Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system

System: Ubuntu 16.04 64-bit
Processor: AMD FX 3.5 GHz / Intel i3 3.0 GHz
Memory: 4 GB RAM
Graphics: Intel HD 4000 (only proprietary GPU drivers are supported)
Storage: 1 GB available space
Other: Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system. Requires libidn11 libsndio6.1
Just a note, you are sad of the situation but you still decided to get rid of the only people able to support those features.

But you advise for refunds so at least you are aware of the sillyness of the situation.

Good luck for the rest of the development.
Your intention was good, and I want to thank you for that.
The situation is a little disappointing it is true, but not dramatic;-)
(Attention I do not allow myself to speak for the Mac community, which I do not know well)

In my opinion you should have maintained Linux support for several reasons:
_ A refund is always possible on GOG, therefore safe.
_ The Linuxians will not see your game, in their searches on the site!
_ The Linux community helps itself, for all that concerns their OS!!!
(for pilot updates as well)

Personally I just think, that you lost sales.
It’s a shame, your studio does a good job with Linux development, and doesn’t reap the benefits!
Even without anyone on Linux support you should think about it again.
There’s little chance of disappointment.

Thanks for continuing the updates :-D
THIS IS GREAT !

Zoidberg, LinuxFire, thanks for your well-wishes! It's good to see a quick response.

Zoidberg, unfortunately our in-house engine expert was one of the founders. He decided to leave after Godhood went into In Development. We didn't have a choice in who we kept on, as we had to shrink to a team of only founders.

LinuxFire, I'll take your comments into consideration. I admit that I have always been impressed with the readiness that Linux users have to investigate and solve issues. Our main goal here is not to misguide people. Perhaps more Linux users can share their take on this matter. If we find that advertising Linux again is the best for the community, then I will reconsider putting it up. And hopefully we can spend some time together to fix any low-hanging issues.

In the meanwhile I hope gamers will find this game here on GOG and enjoy it, whichever OS they are on :)
Thanks for the positivity!
Sometimes there are different visions, and opposite characters.

You led the Linux project to the end!
You didn’t keep quiet!
For me there was never any doubt, you did all that was possible with your acquaintances!
Your team is made up of respectful people, thank you.
If you’ve had differences with your fellow penguin, it happens... (It’s annoying for us :-)
But maintaining the work on GOG, shows, your value.

With a little experience, the clues that show good intentions recognize this easily.
People who are different, sometimes never starts work!

Hi, I apologise for this little off-topic, but will you add the achievements of the game on GOG Galaxy as you did with Steam? Thanks!

Alexim, all Godhood's achievements should be available through GOG Galaxy since launch yesterday. Let me know if you experience any issues.

LinuxFire, thank you again for your positive words. We'll do our best to keep deserving your respect!

Ouch, indeed...
Hello, I can definitely understand the issues with being a small studio and not being able to officially support additional systems. I thank you for still providing Linux (and Mac) installers, which I could download. Thanks for your efforts, they are appreciated !

AbbeyManuel:
I am neither a Linux gamer (yet. But hopefully within a couple years.) nor am I someone who will buy your game in short notice since I usually prefer real-time to turn-based. (But I probably am going to buy it eventually; until then I hope those who like turn-based buy it like water in a desert.)

But I wanna say I appreciate the transparency and the attempts to keep the other platforms's versions available, and also the commitment to keep updating them. It's the sort of thought this industry needs more of, and that alone makes me want to support your studio with a purchase.

I also understand that in these tough times the world economy suffered a lot and it reflects in these things. It's no surprise you had to downsize. Hopefully you will soon weather the bad times and grow up to the point where you can offer support to those versions again.
Keep being like this; people will buy your games and notice they are made by people who respect their customers and consider them more than walking moneybags.
You can hardly imagine how happy I am to see the support of a Windows user, for the Penguins!
joppo you just lit up my day

Your game was on my wishlist in the "someday" pile but this kind of communication and support is something I feel strongly about supporting so into the cart it goes.

Even though for the time being my gaming is all on Windows (someday I'll hopefully find the time I need to learn Linux properly) I really want to commend your choice to continue providing installers for these communities of gamers even if your in house talent doesn't allow for full support at this point.

Congratulations on the launch, thank you again for the transperancy, and I look forward to playing your game :)
Managed to get Godhead running on Ubuntu 20.04
Had two error messages

1/ ./godhood: error while loading shared libraries: libssl.so.1.0.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Solution: Install libss1.0.0

edit the source list sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list to add security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial-security main
sudo apt update
sudo apt install libssl1.0.0

2/ ./godhood: error while loading shared libraries: libsndio.so.6.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Solution: From my folder GOG Games/Godhood/game/. I removed the file libSDL2-2.0.so.0

Well, given that Microsoft's latest OS is something I don't wanna touch even with a 3-meter pole and I can't see signs of them changing for the better, I'd say my relocation to penguinland is overdue. I just need to setup a Linux computer I can use in parallel to my Win7 to learn the ropes and go from there.

But yeah, go Tux!
While the lack of official Linux support is of course disappointing, I plan to provide unofficial support for Godhood through ./play.it, as I already do with the previous great games of Abbey Games Reus and Renowed Explorers: International Society.

I will open a new thread in this subforum as soon as ./play.it support for Godhood is ready.
