I currently use Galaxy 1.2, and not gonna lie, there are literally zero reasons for me to update to Galaxy 2.0. Steam is currently far superior as a way to centralise my libraries thanks to features like the overlay, controller support, and SteamVR.

However, I've been really worried about Galaxy 2.0 replacing Galaxy 1.2.

The main Galaxy page doesn't have a "Not interested in Galaxy 2.0 ? Download 1.2 instead" (or similar) section, and right now, the only place to download Galaxy 1.2 is through a small button located in the footer of the GOG website.

I also wonder if the 1.2 installer will stop working one day, or force-install 2.0 once 2.0 leaves beta.

Yes, eventually it will replace 1.2.

I don't see the issue though. No one forces to use Galaxy's new cross platform features. If you prefer Steam as your main client, you keep adding GOG games to Steam just like you're doing now. Literally nothing changes for you.

All features present in 1.2 will eventualy be available in 2.0

I do see some big huge issues there, and yes, things will indeed change for the worse for pre-2.0 Galaxy users.

The 2.0 interface and functionality of Galaxy is significantly worse than its counterpart in earlier versions.

So if GOG were to discontinue pre-2.0 versions, that would be morally wrong.

The only way that would be morally justifiable is if GOG were to put an option in 2.0 that lets the user make the 2.0's interface and functionality be 100% identical to the interface & functionality of pre-2.0.

But it doesn't seem like that's actually going to happen. So if it doesn't, then GOG needs to keep up development on pre-2.0 versions too, and make sure that pre-2.0 versions are always offered & readily available for download on the GOG website. And the choice to update or not should be an in-app options setting, and shouldn't require the user to have specialized knowledge such as the technique we are discussing here.

to your galaxy launcher line in desktop shortcut. add it after galaxy.exe (or whatever it uses to run galaxy now) in command path.

What excatly is morally wrong here ?
Gog is a company that offers a client as an additional software to increase the attractiveness of their service. So it decides now that this additional software needs changes to further increase the attractiveness of said service. But keeping both versions supported would increase costs significantly without having a fincancial counterweight to justifiy that.
But this isn't Steam/Epic/etc., its gog - don't like the way gog is taking its optional client, just skip it and use third party tools that integrate gog or just download them manually.

As to your question:
Yes it will definately replace it, but I doubt that gog will take any measure to keep you from using it*. It will just not support it any longer, thus if gog at one point sees the need to change the backend, which Galaxy ist talking to, Galaxy 1.2 will stop working.

*And yes they will stop offering it for download > why offer something to your customers you don't want to give support for ?

How about you just report whatever it is you think is so egregious about the new UI with 2.0 instead of demanding things remain the way they are?

Is this Official? I run 2.0 on 1 of my boxes. I like 1.2 better.

Actually, one way of doing it would be to open-source Galaxy 1.2 and let the community continue working on it, just like how Nexus Mods open-sourced the Nexus Mod Manager when they switched to Vortex.

EDIT: Also, I agree with some of you guys. 1.2's UI is way better.

if you can add this parameter to galaxy then it must be official and supported.
