steam still runs in windows 7 so, why do gog galaxy require windows 8? this prevents me from installing carmageddon max pack through gog, as the offline installer is broken. the offline installer installs a non working version. i do have the steam version however so, i guess i can use gog galaxy(on windows 8) and steam(on windows 7) but, it does not make any sense for gog to not support an operating system that steam does support.

GOG Galaxy is a relatively new app (it's not even out of beta yet), and it doesn't make sense to make new applications for a dead OS.
it is not dead as long as people use it and games is released for it.

Exactly. According to Steam, less than 2% of users are still on Windows 7. You'd have to be pretty bad at business to spend money on such market.
many games released on steam, specially the indie games, still runs in windows 7. i have 2 pcs running windows 7, though one of them is unable to run unreal engine games because of a developer lockout(developer of the pc). the entire disgaea series(disgaea rpg not tested) runs in windows 7(including disgaea 6, though it bugs background tasks, causing other stuff to crash).
Sure, and some developers also support Linux even though it doesn't really count as a gaming platform. Every developer has to make decisions as to how to spend their budget and what is their target audience.

The thing is that as a Windows 7 user connected to the internet, you are danger not only to yourself, but to everyone else as well. And GOG Galaxy is by nature an internet-only app.

Have you actually tried installing GOG Galaxy in Windows 7? 2.0.43 was released for Windows 7 support, even though it's not officially supported. And someone in that same thread said 2.0.51 and 2.0.55.99 are also okay. The last one is the version I'm still using in Windows 10. If the latest version doesn't work, you can find links to the old ones at the bottom of the aforementioned thread: GOG-Galaxy and Windows 7 (x64) support?
i did not know that. the download page of settler 6 said that gog galaxy requires windows 8(or something like that).

Steam has been created when Windows XP was king. Removal of Windows 7 support is just a matter of time.
there is still games coming to windows xp through steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1001520/_/
that game have a release date in 2028.

You do know that anybody can "release" anything on Steam? And almost all of those "games" are pure trash, created by kids that discover game engines for the first time, or just putting something out there for a quick cash grab.

So, a game that supposedly supports Windows XP is going to be released on a platform that cannot be run on Windows XP. In 5 years. Right. Not suspicious at all.
tomba4. i will not respond to further posts from you. i would have blocked you if it had been possible but, it is not.
Steam saves userdata in a subdirectory of it's installation instead of programdata or a user data directory. Should Galaxy be programmed just as sloppy?

Just because Steam does something, Galaxy doesn't have to.

And as others have pointed out, older versions do work on Windows 7 and also the new versions can be run with a bit of tweaking.
Windows 7 is a GOOS (Good Old Operating System) and those require a bit more handywork.

On itch.io you can even find new Amiga games and some for the C64.

To be fair, GOG isn't even able to develop a working client on windows 10. So talking about other systems is pretty unrealistic.

You may or may not like Steams design decisions, but they have a working client that also runs on other platforms and makes installing and running games a pretty smooth experience. Something that GOGs eternal BETA, that was forced onto their unsuspecting users, probably will never achieve.

On top of that, they (Steam) are supporting proton development which helps creating a larger linux user base, something that is a prerequisite for ever getting native versions of future games. Of course this is not a selfless engagement, but I don't care as long as it helps. Where is GOGs support for the open-source community?

For Galaxy, we (well you, not me, I voted with my wallet a short time after Galaxy 2 was released) have tons of year old bugs that are not fixed, and desperate but unheard feature requests here in the forum.

It seems much more important to integrate unwanted things like "New store inside GOG GALAXY", well thanks but no thanks.

I would laugh if it wasn't so sad. A good idea run to shit by incompetence and a cash grabbing attitude that you normally only would expect from stores like Steam or Epic.
