Falran: Hey everyone,

Some of our users are indeed experiencing difficulties with updating their GOG GALAXY. Rest assured, the appropriate team is currently investigating the issue.

If you are one of the affected, please turn off GOG GALAXY completely, by going to the top left corner's cogwheel and pressing "Exit". Next please make sure that GOG GALAXY (or any related processes) aren't still running in the background (if so, close them by selecting "End task"). You can do this via Task Manager (use the combination of WIN key+R and type: taskmgr)

Next, please download the GOG GALAXY Webinstaller (the big DOWNLOAD button).

Lastly, please "install" GOG GALAXY by using the Webinstaller. This will make the installer update your GOG GALAXY and overwrite any possible damaged files.

Once you turn GOG GALAXY back on you should have the newest update available and no changes will be made to your games or library (you won't have to re-import the games etc.).
Same issue :(

Funny how you brought up another problem, no setting for fully closing GOG Galaxy down when... closing it, by pressing a red X button that would usually indicate an application would be closed not minimised.

Or maybe I'm just old...

Xan0010: Can confirm. Im getting this error ...
Had the same error as you for days.
While the Webinstaller linked by Falran should behave the same way and should just download the 2.0.58.4 - another possible fix is to/might be directly download the current version :

https://cdn.gog.com/open/galaxy/client/2.0.58.4/setup_galaxy_2.0.58.4.exe

(at least this fixed the update bug for me - as it directly fixed it i couldn't/can't compare with webinstaller now)

This unfortunately made it worse for me, I'm now getting an error:
Essential components needed to start GOG Galaxy are missing or incorrectly configured. If this continues, please reinstall the application.

EDIT:
I closed out the error and started GOG again, seems to open fine now. This software is fickle.

pretty embarrassing that the update wasn't immediately rolled back

I simply uninstalled galaxy and won't be buying from GOG or using the client until it's fixed, even if the CP2077 expansion comes out.

chem: pretty embarrassing that the update wasn't immediately rolled back

Considering similar... well uninstalling anyway. I will give them the time it will take me to finish what Im playing/installing the next set since the version I was updating from is still working.

Also, since I really do value those standalone installers and have those archived..... yeah I may just retreat to those for a while if they dont fix this by then.
The Biggest problem with the webinstaller, is that it behaves like a virus/worm:

- Install some executables on %TEMP% on a folder that generates with random characters. (WOHOO!!!!)
- By default, any decent (a.k.a. not Microsoft antivirus) security products will see this as an atempt to infect a machine.
- And it tries to connect to the internet. Result: It will be blocked by any decent security software.
- If the security software ask confirmation for the user, the installer becomes useless, that's because webinstaller will prompt a </s> Really useful message </s> and WOWZERS!!! </S> it won't have a "Retry" Button (seems these buttons aren't cheap enough or there's not enough coders out there that can't add 2+2 reliablily, think retail version of CP2077 style.). Also, for the lulz: The message has a link to a non-existent page (YAY!!!!), that is behind a two-factor authentication scheme... BRAVO!!!

Honestly, and no sarcasm past this point... This is sad. It seems like "At home blacksmith, wooden knife" is the motto of CDPR/GOG these days.

Workaround: Look for full standalone offline installers. GOG Galaxy 2.0.58.4 AFAIK, ATM. Hint: Majorgeeks seems to have a full working copy. Is easier to look elsewhere than in their own homepage.

Franz Kafka would be so proud of you, CDPR people!!

My first look at this part of the forums and some of y'all are coming across as unhinged.

I couldn't get the darn thing to update, and I noticed that the GalaxyClientService wasn't terminating on the update and just using a bunch of CPU time, so I killed it during the update.

I got the "Essential components are missing" message, but the update seems to have worked. It self-reports as 2.0.58 anyway, and I only saw the "Essential components" message once.

This may or may not work for you, but that's the nature of Beta software.

I tried the update process just now 01fev 08:53am local time, but apparently it's still the same. The same error. GOG Staff should pay special attention to this issue asap.
