Yeah, these have probably been posted before, but regardless I figured people might like a refresher.

Essentially, this is someone who's gone to the trouble of releasing GOG-style executables for Arena and Daggerfall already pre-configured with DOSbox, the manuals, da woiks.

While I would love to see Bethesda hook up with GOG and release the entire series, Battlespire and Redguard included, this is probably the closest we're gonna get for a while, and hey! They're legally free, the guy's at least tried to contact Bethesda about making sure what he's done's alright, and there's even plenty of added content (at least on Daggerfall) for those who prefer their titles modded.

I think your second point about getting the Id catalog would be the major win with Bethesda as we have Arena and Daggerfall (see above) and Morrowwind and Oblivion already play nice with new systems. Redguard would be fun if they could get it working - I still have the original disk but haven't played it in years.

Or...

All the Doom, Heretic/Hexen, Wolfenstein and Quake games would be like a dozen GOG release right there. Throw in the Elder Scrolls games and other stuff like that Cthulu game and we're talking 20 solid releases easy.

The issue there might be price. Anything in the last decade, even Morrowind, sells for more than $10 elsewhere. I have seen a lot of comments around here about Doom and such not being worth $6 a piece to a lot of people as well.

A Doom / Doom 2 combo back might be though ... I see a bigger hurdle in that bethsoft is in pretty tight with Valve and all of this stuff is already up on Steam, not to mention that most of those titles are still technically the property of Activision (I think)

The publisher listed for all the old games is now Bethesda, so I don't think there are any issues there. Activision published Quake 4 and the publisher is listed as Betheda on Impulse for example. I think Quake 4 is just not on Steam because Valve like to post new games, not old ones.

Which really makes GOG the perfect counterpart to Steam like GOG staff themselves have said. It's a shame more devs aren't jumping to make basically free money off their old titles.

*Whew!* Glad people liked this, I was afraid it would start one of those debates about "this was released without the permission of the publisher, bad user, bad!" or something.

Now if I could just find something similar for my copy of Battlespire all would be good (since I totally suck at configuring DOSbox for ANYthing.)

I already got Daggerfall and Area from Beth but it's a pain to type in the start up sequence every time, having GOG handle that would be a major plus! And I'd pay money for them despite having downloaded them for free.

The downloads I linked to are, essentially, what you would get if GoG did it. Both are already pre-configured with DOSbox to run fine (at least, they do for me on Windows 7 64 bit) and Daggerfall has a crapton of mods included as well, that can be installed should you wish.

I had the same problem the first time I tried to play Daggerfall -- I could never get DOSbox configured right, and it never ran for me. Now, after I play Arena for a while, I can finally give Daggerfall the try I've always wanted to.

So they updated how they start up?

Yep, install and everything in one clean package. No config, no booting a fake CD drive in DOSbox, no editing the ram config or any of that stuff. All just one nice little install, with a shortcut right to the game.

I had no idea this existed. I'm an old Daggerfall fanatic but I had given up on it because having to mount stuff in DOSBox is just a pain, even though I did get it working. This is just soo much better, a simple install and everything just works, just what I wanted. The game is really getting up there in terms of age, but hell I just might have another go at it before DaggerXL gets playable now that it's so simple - with mods, patches and everything.

Again thank you so much for bringing this to my attention, now I can return to my old love once again.

I think they could work around the pricing easily enough if Bethesda would be on board. Bundle packaging and giving away Keen and Wolfenstein for free as attention getters would work great.
