OK I have to ask: what is considered "dangerous" by Swedish standards?

Well, during the late 1990's and early 2000's, the region I'm currently living in was rather notorious for its high crime rate. It was not uncommon to read about unprovoked assaults or robberies in this region. During the last 2 years there have been several shootouts not far from where I live, usually involving youth gangs who don't care if someone else gets hit (in one recent event a person from a criminal gang opened fire in the middle of a crowd of youths. We have a house nearby that is meant to give youths (up to ~20) something to do, showing movies, offering boardgames and a cafeteria for youths. The criminal just walked right in and opened fire, probably targeting someone from a rival gang). Basically we have all the common issues that are present in a poor area here, made worse by an issue that might turn slightly political and it might also step on quite a few toes if I try to explain it.


The worst that has happened to me was when I got a knife pointed at me (which by the way was one of the most terrifying things that has happened to me. It is hard to act brave when someone demands that you hand over all the money you have, and they have a knife and 4 friends)

My home town is Salt Lake City, and here is the popular 9th & 9th neighborhood, a small local business and bourgeois bohemia enclave. I live about a couple of blocks away on one of the leafy residential streets. The neighborhood has changed a lot over the years and arguably become *too* gentrified from the funky arty hive it was 10 years ago but we still like it. At the 1:00 mark the video cuts to a shot of Tower Theatre, our local art-house and my place of employment.

What did you have in mind? If you were thinking of the risk of getting randomly pounced by a cute blonde girl, that is, in my experience, far more likely to happen in Finland (seriously, it has happened more times to me in Finland than Sweden).

I don't always feel very good, but it's a pretty nice place to live. Quiet and occasionally scary, but I can live with that.

That is the idea that most people seem to have about Sweden. I only wish it was that good :(

And believe me when i say that the first thought when you hit the ground in a nightclub because some girl pounced you is not "oh nice, a girl pounced me", it is "Ow, that hurts!". Your second thought will either be that the floor is all icky because people have spilled beer, cider and who knows what on it or "Ow, that hurts!" again, when someone steps on your hand. Then the person who pounced you will enter your thoughts, but by then, you don't really like that person, because of what she has put you through.

Here's one from the annual Swallows Day parade. It's a huge (2-1/2 hours), rather disorderly parade (no longer quite so alcohol-fueled as it used to be); the most notable acts are the dancers.

This is a relatively good video as videos of this parade go. The dancers are Chinelo dancers, a dance that was developed in Morelos state, Mexico, by young men mocking the Spaniards; the masks and dance steps parody supposed Spanish facial features (goatees, long noses, bushy eyebrows) and dance movements (jumping, spinning, hip swaying).

I live quite close to that building (small mall) where the odd-looking guy is eating, I was there e.g. yesterday. Rough neighborhood, as you can see. Now they are finally completing those new apartment buildings they were still building in this video.

Fortunately in winter there are lots of exciting things you can do here, including but not restricted to:

- walking in the snow
- running in the snow
- making snow angels
- throwing snowballs
- peeing in the snow
- eating snow
- hunting squirrels in the snow

Our nightlife is also very lively and exciting. This seems to be recorded in the pub ("räkälä" in Finnish) closest to my home. I presume, I've never been inside, does not look my kind of place and I value my life too much.
