RaggieRags: Well, to put it bluntly, having an active sex life means I have no need for wank material.

Neobr10: And since when people with an active sexual life can't watch porn? Even couples watch porn to "spice" things up a bit.
Jeez guys, I was talking about myself and not married couples in general. I don't need to spice up anything or get off on porn. I'm sexually well covered as it is. Excuse me for being satisfied, I guess.

I'm not entirely sure RaggieRags joined the discussion to talk about her sexual habits :-P I'm just fascinated how did the discussion come to this, I mean it's like you people are overly defensive about porn of all things for some reason

Especially considering that RaggieRags, unlike say myself, was actually perfectly clear and concise at all times.

Fenixp: I kind of agree with you, not with that unfortunate wording tho: I have never seen a game where sex would be done well. The only sex scene which ever stood out to me is the one with the russian chick in Alpha Protocol, but that's just because I have a thing for strong slavic females. Others were either done serviceably (like the one in Witcher 2, which was ... Basically your bog-standard movie sex scene, just as Mass Effect), botched up somehow (like the original Witcher - the 'cinematic' sex scenes were fine for the most part, but the cards were terrible), or just plain terrible (Fahrenheit. You move your mouse up and down, upon which ... Just nevermind.)

Problem is that I have never seen a videogame capturing sex in an interactive format properly. Even if we talk some crazy sex-toy gaming perripherals, what videogame sex is missing is not physical contant, it's a semblance of feeling of intimacy, of some sort of connection and chemistry between characters, all of this somehow transferred into an interactive experience - which I just have no clue how could be done interactively without turning utterly ridiculous. I'm not saying it can't be done tho, I'm just not quite clever enough to know. And I'm not even talking about the fact that all of this requires extremely well-written moment-to-moment dialogues, overall dialogue arc just won't cut it.

So the only way videogames can currently do sex is via cinematic videos - and even those won't be quite as beleiveable as in the movie format, as polygon-based character models are just so static whenever two characters as much as hold hands.
I thought the sex scene between Shepard and Kaidan in Mass Effect 1 was fine. Not a terrific scene, but it did what it was supposed to do in that part of the story. The sex scenes in Dragon Age: Origins are IMO an example of bad sex scenes that are pretty jarring to watch. You've got two characters in ugly underwear shown in different positions with someone singing in the background, and BANG you're suddenly thrown outside the tent talking in armor again. I think they were aiming for a hot/tender lovemaking scene, but it just ended up looking silly.

Actually, the only examples of WELL done sex scenes in games that come to my mind have all been in fan NPC mods for the Baldur's Gate series. Not to say they are all good, but some of them will definitely steam up your glasses. :-) But these are made entirely in text, so there is no problem of trying to make it *look* good.

I think they were going for funny than romantic.

RaggieRags: ...
Whatever the presentation of the sex cinematics may be, it doesn't change that videogames are an interactive medium first and foremost, that's my biggest gripe with them. Any attempt to present interactive sex in games was a failure as far as I know, and that's a shame, especially since I've seen (extremely rarely I might add) mods to handle them well.

From a game like Mass Effect or Alpha Protocol, what I would like to see is interactive sex where you get conversation-like choices that would then influence your relationship with the said NPC. And I'm NOT talking about choices of the 'CUM ON HER TITS!' kind, this would need to be presented extremely tastefully and in accordance to the rest of the writing and presentation of the said game. I have actually seen this done already in a Neverwinter Nights mod, A Dance with Rogues. Most sex scenes in the mod are fairly explicit and serve no actual purpose sadly, but there are some which shine and serve to present some characters in a different light, to deepen their personalities and make them more human. There was even a bit where you got to know a certain character only and purely via a sex scene, and even tho like 10 words were actually said, I suddenly liked him more than most characters in the game. That's what I want to see, sex scenes used as other means of interactive storytelling.

Ivory&Gold: I'm strictly against sex in video games. Up until the point I happen upon an example that proves to me it can be done in a non-ridiculous way, that is
Do you have a problem with violence being done in a ridiculous way? Why do you care what other people play?

avatar
Potzato: I would have no interest at all in such games, and I'd really like that the industry doesn't develop in that direction. Really really.
Why wouldn't you want the industry to include sexual issues in games?

BlueMooner: Why do you care what other people play?
Hm?

You said that you're strictly against sex in video games, and in a later post complained of time lost watching a lame scene. I take this to mean that you don't want games to include any sexual content ever, so I ask why not simply skip games you don't want instead of saying no games should have it?

I don't wanna skip Mass Effect, though.
do not mind tastefull content that is light and does not just focus the story around it alone
somthing along the line of mass effect was good was not to direct but did make a good show of it and made you ear it compared to dragon age 2 were it made every one bi sexual and easy to get in 1 go around

but i do think it should allow a person to skip it should they not be interested in it instead of forcing it on them

You can skip the sex scenes tho :-P

Mass Effect lets me skip pretty much every non-gameplay bit. That's part of what makes it great.

To me, it's the "realism" of NPCs that makes a game fun for me. One of the reasons I don't like FPS is because I find them so bland and hollow. When all I'm doing is killing waves of opponents, none of them stand out, none of them are important. I really get the sense that all I'm doing is killing pixels, and it makes me feel like I'm wasting my time sitting at a box with colored lights.

OTOH, if I'm not just killing a bunch of guards, but the 3rd blue brigade that survived the orc horde 4 years ago, then those opponents have realism, and interacting with them carries emotional weight. To use another analogy, I don't want to play a horror game with a "fear" meter telling me how scared I'm supposed to be. I want to actually feel that emotion. It's connecting with the game world and the creatures in it, the realism of their behaviors and actions, that makes a game fun for me. In this sense, whether I'm killing or fucking or talking or helping or travelling with someone, they are all made more enjoyable when who I'm interacting with has depth and history behind them. This to me is how sex scenes can be enjoyable. (I had the hugest crush on "Nines" Rodriguez from VTM Bloodlines. His personality, history and actions made me swoon, and I would have loved a sex scene with him.)

And like Jello, there's always room for surprise buttsex too, let's keep it real. : )
In my opinion, if it is a game like LSL it gets a pass, mainly because it focuses on humor also. And the sex stuff is censored.

However if it is a Eroge/Fanservice game I will not give it a pass. Rapelay, I am looking at you, YA PIECE OF CRAP!
