Cancer of internet that should be cut off and burned with fire. Don't want to have anything to do with it and it annoys the heck out of me how often it's showed at my face not to mention the number spam mail I receive about my nonexistent FB account.

Mivas: Have you disable it or have you deleted it, i.e. sent a copy of your ID to Irish FB central with formal request? :D
I disabled it for the first 6 months and then when I was sure that I didn't need it, I requested that they delete my account.

And no, I didn't need to do anything silly to get the account deleted :) Just a few clicks on their web page. At least it was this simple back then. Don't know how it is done now.

inc09nito: I think that there are two things to keep in mind:
1) facebook itself - I don't give a damn about it, I just don't use this garbage
2) GOG using facebook for contests and this is the issue we want to discuss really. I think it sucks and I don't really understand why we are forced to make fb accounts to take part in contests. We are buying games HERE, we are discussing games HERE, the GOG community is HERE, not on facebook. GOG, what the hell are you doing? :(
Facebook is a great tool for marketing/PR, it's to spread the word. That is all.

If you're annoyed at Facebook for its privacy issues then set up a fake account (it still requires a mobile number so maybe a burner phone? :P) and use that for contests only, of course that destroys the whole idea why GOG uses it.

I forgot one thing that really pisses me off and that is sites that promotes you logging in with either a Google or Facebook account so people don't have to keep track on more than one account. LastPass and other password managers solve this issue much better and with much less security vulnerabilities.

What? You can really do that? Does it also remove all your data from it for good?

I think I have created one fake Facebook account that I needed once for something, I don't even recall what. Maybe something similar like this GOG competition.

What I think about Facebook:

- Work of genius obviously.

- Distrust. It is not there to fill my needs, but those of advertisers and such who want to squeeze as much information about me as possible. Even though it is not an actual scam, it still has the same vibe as the good old scam mails or fake free virus scanner services which are promising all wonderful things to me, acting as if they do it only for the goodness of their heart.

I might create a proper Facebook account at some point though, if it turns out I can't keep up with my real life friends without it. So far this hasn't happened, apparently my friends are not using it that much, or at all, either.

YellowAries: I don't like Facebook for the sole fact that everyone basically knows your entire life story.. but I try to keep that to a minimum and just post funny stuff or interesting stuff.. I also use it to talk to family and close friends..

I HATE Facebook drama
This is the thing. FB was originally meant for family, friends, people you worked with (and then thats with precautions..ie dont chat on it while your sick otherwise people *at work* can see u might not be cough cough sick. I use it for friends and people ive worked with and trust. Other people seem to add strangers like moths to a flame without a thought. Crazy. I also generally post funny and interesting stuff as well. And heck, keeps me from being bored when im somewhere i dont really want to be LOL.
Never used it, never will. Very annoying when everything tries to shove it down my throat.

I never posted anything personal there (no address, no phone number, etc.). So it doesn't really matter to me whether my data was removed or not. Even my profile picture was a self made drawing. It looked like it was drawn by a two year old.
I was forced to use it because people make announcements there. I hardly use it for other purposes.
It's a monster that I avoid like the plague. It's a good concept (though hardly original) but full of bloated junk. Security is always poor, monetization is top priority and you can't do anything about idiots posting photos of you that you'd rather people don't see.

It's a major pet hate of mine when gog and other websites push it and make it a requirement for competitions etc.

Yeah, that reminds me, even governments use Facebook and Twitter for announcements and official statements. Next thing you know the court is going to serve us subpoenas and deliver rulings via those things.
Only created my FB account in 2010. Privacy set to friends only. Closed circle of friends, even so not everyone sees my updates. Info on my fav movies and PC games, nothing else. Anyone who tags me with my personal photo gets taken down. Status tags accepted. Otherwise, I can't be bothered about FB.
Don't need facebook to know The Desolation of Smaug is not too far away:)
it's the best way of contacting somebody in an instant, be it a friend from another country or your brother down the block (especially him, as he NEVER carries his phone with him, and if he does, it's on mute :P

it's also a great thing to remind me of things - for example, I find a really great song on youtube, so I post it on FB, and when I don't know what to listen to, I just go back my history on FB and play all the songs I liked in the past

and of course, it's an ultimate weapon for distributing funny pics and videos :D

If his phone is on mute and he doesn't even carry it with him, how can he notice your FB contact attempt?

I guess for FB to work like that, all your friends should always be near a device that has a FB client running (PC, tablet, smartphone, whatever), and the FB client would have to be active at all times on their device.

At least I would disable FB on my smartphone, just in order to save battery and data usage.
