And there was me thinking that playing on peaceful would be enough to stop these bastards taking large chunks out of the place...

I think it was because the lava was flowing within. When I ensured it just lay in there flat there were no further problems, thankfully.

There's a very old browser version of the game here. It's totally focussed on building and you don't even need to gather resources for that. Other than that there are no end of youtube videos which can give you a taste of the full thing.

Can this game be transferred from one computer to another after being downloaded, or does it have to be downloaded to each computer separately?

Also, I was watching some videos and noticed how things just float. Does water do that too, or will it fill a hole? (Say you dig up under a water source from a cave)?

It can be transferred as it relies on login details more than anything. But you have to copy over the .minecraft folder also if you want to retain access to your worlds and config. Otherwise you'd be starting over.

Thanks, I'm going to have to buy this.

And one more thing I just thought of. Do things ever respawn or do you just have to keep going further to get things? I already know animals do, I am thinking more of things like trees, rocks, sand, dirt, ect.

Dirt and sand don't. You can plant saplings that grow into trees, and each tree when cut produces many saplings, so wood is essentially infinite. Stone and ore don't respawn - you must travel to find more - but there is a machine that can be built called a 'cobblestone generator', so if you want to build a fortress without hollowing out every mountain within twenty miles you can. There's plenty of 'stuff' to do what you want to, though, and exploring is a big focus.

Trees drop saplings when destroyed. These can be planted. Flowers don't currently multiply, but probably will in future. Sugar cane grows like crazy if you plant it near water. I have it in a chequered grid of water and sugar cane. Wheat is very similar but slower and requires that the ground be tilled first.

Anything inanimate doesn't respawn and in the case of more precious materials you're going to have to keep exploring. However there are now portals, the Nether and the ability to change your spawn point. All contribute to an ability to keep on developing the world. But to be honest with you, a bit of exploring you can find more than you're able to carry anyway. I've got about 6 chests just full of stone. No end of iron and glass too. So you won't have any real trouble there.
