Huinehtar: deathclaws
Funny that I am not nearly the only one who started maxing out long range weapons after the first deathclaw encounter in Fallout 1. :D
Shooting them in the eyes at a very very long distance was my way to go too then, but since sniper rifles count as "small weapons" in FA and my main tactic was blowing whole magazines via Uzi into someones head from 50cm range, I only had to get a proper rifle for the deathclaws and didn't have to restart. Since I play not too violent characters and try to do as much as possible via dialogues and bartering, I had to level up my combat skills a bit before encountering the deathclaw again though.

Another "nope" moment from Fallout 1 was the fight against the master.
I never have beaten him in combat ever, he always shoots me down like a dog in two turns, I usually blew up his whole vault with his own nuclear bomb and one time persuaded him to do it himself because his plan is flawed and wrong.

Huinehtar: (snip)
Yeah I have no qualms proclaiming that Fallout 1&2 are the best rpg's I've ever played. I know that an outside observer may consider attributing that to nostalgia, but hell, I played those two games a good 10 years (at least) after they were released. Deathclaws were so terrifying in Fallout 1 that I came very close to wiping out their nest in that one vault in Fallout 2 (I relented, but I can't shake the feeling that I might have doomed the earth that day...)
I really enjoyed Fallout 3, but I agree : The deathclaws were a bit too easy. For my next playthrough, if I get round to it, I'll set the difficulty to hard and perhaps look for a mod that decreases the rate of xp gain. Those damned bears were more frightening with their eery zombie-ish growls (shudder)

Interesting to hear you mention warhammer tabletop. C clocked in many hours playing Dawn of War online and I came within an inch of playing tabletop 40k - I wanted to build an army out of the Salamander chapter of the spacemarines. I had a starter kit and frequently bought that White Dwarf magazine. I especially enjoyed reading the battle reports :) The Green knight seemed like the coolest unit ! If I had to lay warhammer fantasy tabletop, I'd probably go for the dwarves...

Johnmourby: I have one big "Nope moment"

When playing System Shock 2.

I was continuously fighting and loosing against a door and three turrets. each time I died I pressed quickload and tried again. On the 30th time however I pressed quicksave by mistake and saved as I was falling to the floor dead. My last real save was an hour ago. And now I had to do it all again......

I nearly ragequite.
We've all been there :)
Games need to develop the habit of saving in three quicksave slots, and autosave slots for that matter. I seem to recall a game that did that, but I can't remember which one (perhaps the first Half Life)

Next time play with the "Wanderer's Edition" total overhaul.

Cool, I'll check it out!
My latest "NOPE" comes from the game Vanquish. The game can be hard anyway, but I felt I was doing pretty good so in an attempt to earn all achievements I decided to tackle the challenge missions. I managed to beat the first one after a good number of deaths and profanity... I then youtubed the sixth and final one just to see what I was in for.

I watched it with slack jaw, looked back at my TV and declared "NOPE".

A moment in dead space where, as I come into some part of the ship, a random necromorph jumps up or out of somewhere. I decided to run away from that place, 'cause I wasn't going near that thing.
The Witcher 2 - the tentacle monster scripted fight.

I forced it through in the end, but without any sense of positive achievement. Not intended for PC gamers to enjoy, I should think.

Edit: plus of course also Dethmold characterization though this was not really a moment - if there had to be one, it would be the pimple popping!

Neverwinter nights 1

The betrayal by Aribeth de Tylmarande first time when i played the game i was crushed it came out of nowhere ,i was shocked and refused to accept that she betrayed , thank god the game has a choice where you can keep her alive and she was in one of the expansions as well , But i was pretty mad it happened.

Neverwinter nights 2

Death of Shandra Jerro , seriously after all that with her in the main game i refused to play the expansions after the game ended as it did.

Mass effect 3 : Ask kneecap "The Selfish Jerk"

Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium
Alys Brangwin.........sigh refused to play after that

doom 3 , back when it came out the game was hyped to hell and when i played it the game graphics and mechanics was extreme never played it fully, was in the adventure games /rpg mood then could not cope with the game at all

blood 2 NOPE

I admit especially the death of Shandra Jarro in NWN2 felt "brave and foolish" - but I think that the whole franchise also rather benefits from the deep story moments such as those.

ya nowadays its really hard to find such games with deep story moments, i was hoping for a neverwinter nights 3 to combines the story of both 1 and 2 but sigh....mmo

Ah well, in the age of KickStarter funded PlaneScape Torment sequels, who can tell if NWN3 shall not come to pass?

But then also be prepared that there might be quite a few of us who demand Bishop to be brought back as romance proper! ;-) Bishop was, as such, mind you, not a "nope" but rather "yes indeedy" point for NWN2 - very well written characters overall!

ah bishop , its pretty sad he died in my playthrough of the game in the end , i was too concentrated on sandra to establish any influence over him. Maybe i should play the game proper again

NWN2 is one of my near ragequit games. Near the end, you are in a room somewhere after a major battle (sorry, it's been ages since I played this) and you can't recover health or mana without potions I think. I don't know how far you have to fight through to get beyond that issue, but I went into that scenario underprepared and would have had to back track a long time befor I could have reattempted it in a better state. It killed the game for me really.

I do recall enjoying NWN 1 more than NWN 2 as well, so I was really just playing to say I did at the time.
almost every encounter in homm3 campaing
