Gemstone III on AOL back in the day then Doom over a LAN. After that, it was Return to Castle Wolfenstein.
Online? The original Diablo. Played a fair deal of it with my friends - albeit it was laggy as hell.
Oh yeah and on that rainbow six game, I'd have nicknames such as:

Professional Camper

Expert Teamkiller
Red alert
love that game :)
Heh, we always had really shitty internet, so I wasn't able to run an online game until I started college 2 years ago. My first online gaming experience was Gmod.
Wing Commander Armada challenge ladder in 1994 on the CompuServe FlightSim Forums. Good times, even over a modem paying by the minute for long distance. I never quite made the "comfy chair" (ladder leader) but I always had fun.

In 1994 I was playing 5 card draw for minutes on prodigy lol (don't really consider it mulitplayer though)

My very first online multiplayer experience was some German MUD that I played through the text terminals at the university campus in Dresden in the early/mid 90's. While it was fascinating, I was typing far to slowly to keep up with the other players and didn't play for very long.

First (and for me "real") MP at home was Quake shareware. Excessively over the 2MBit connection at the dorm.
Unreal Tournament, teaming up with a friend & Roger Wilco. Around 2002 I suppose. We spent whole nights in a foreign bedroom...
Tried to find a screenshot to put that last bit in perspective but I couldn't find one.
Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. Played only a bit. And I've also tried some MMO, I don't even remember the name. But I prefer to play against people I know, and not against random people.
Memory is fuzzy on the "first" one, but it was one of:

- Warzone 2100 playing in co-op against the AI.
- Age of Empires, playing in teams.

My first (and only) MMO was Asheron's Call.

After that, tons upon tons of Battlefield 1942 + mods. Now, nothing.
As I recall my first time was X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter. Spent ages on that game! :-)
Many years ago a friend of mine introduced me to Starcraft. We spent countless nights playing it on his LAN, until finally we decided to take it one step further and enter into BattleNet to play online against human opponents. On our first game we got mowed down in a matter of minutes. We would never play it online again.
Years later we played Guild Wars, it was fun. And that's all. I'm not really into MMO games.
Jedi Knight: Jedi Outcast, with a 65k :D

I was ripped in every single match due to lag :D
Ever since I read this thread, I'm trying to remember the name of the MUD that I was playing in the early 90s. I think I have it now, it was actually two different MUDs, which made the memory harder to track down.

The first one was , then later there came [url=http://finalfrontier.mud.de/]Final Frontier. Oddly enough, both projects still exist after 20 years or more. I'm now tempted to visit them again and look around for a bit. :)

Thanks for the thread, it triggered a very enjoyable trip down memory lane for me. ;)

Edit: Amazing. My character in the "MorgenGrauen" MUD still exists. Last logout in 1995 ... ;)
