A jailbroken Ipad is a pretty sweet gadget to have, really. Quake III Arena over WiFi is a blast to play on it, and with Shredder Chess, it becomes the greatest chess computer ever made. It's a good e-reader, and web browser.
Put your entire music library and a couple dozen movies on there, and it's an awesome little gadget to have. I got one about 6 months ago when my ipod got dropped. instead of buying a new ipod. I like it. It also runs a version of Dosbox called Idos when jailbroken. I've been playing Panzer General and Ultima 5 on it lately.
It also doubles as a great relaxation machine. There is a free program called Ambiance that plays all kinds of downloadable sounds. I use it every night to sleep to the sound of rainfall. I like it.
But I don't see the need to buy an ipad 2.

TheCheese33: It's not meant to be a PC replacement. It hits a sweet spot that a phone and laptop can't reach.

orcishgamer: The sweet spot in the billfold? Sorry, couldn't resist:)
Yeah really... for $600 it should replace a PC, was more my point.

HoneyBakedHam: Between the iPod, iPhone, and iPad, Apple has become a wildly successful company.

I wouldn't be surprised if they started making computers soon.
I will admit, this made me chuckle.
The only Apple product I have is the only one they haven't refreshed since, ooh, 2009: the iPod Classic. And even then, it's pretty identical to the Classic they released in 2008, only with a larger hard drive.

reaver894: I have 1 thing to say to apple.... fuck off and stop flooding the market with overpriced stuff, concentrate on 1 good product instead of these half baked gimmicks and bring out the other half later.
Steve Jobs has always been a patent trolling, gimmick obsessed individual who to my knowledge has never developed anything new. He is however very good at spotting windows of opportunity and nailing them. Apple didn't develop tablet technology, they just nailed the window when ARM would be powerful enough to really drive one and marketed it well.

Their A4 in the current iPad is supposed to be a Cortex A9 at 1GHz mated to a ARM Mali 50-series. Not bad for when it was released, but the move is now towards either multicore triple-issue Cortex A15s or multicore dual issue A9s and a single 1GHz A9 is getting rather long in the tooth as a result.

If anything I'd think one would fuss at them for being slow to replace the A4. There are plenty of rocks to throw at Apple and anyone else who uses Foxconn. Not producing an upgraded iPad 2 would put them in the position of selling a larger device with less power then a Smart Phone, would seem to be one of them if the did so instead of the reverse.

hedwards: I haven't used an iPad, but don't they still require you to use 2 hands? How do you hold on?
Why would they require 2 hands in a different manner then any other portable electronic devices? Most multitouch gestures I've seen including those the iPad uses that I'm aware of can be done with one hand.

One to hold the gadget and one to actually put the input in. I can one hand my Nexus One, mainly because it's wee small comparatively speaking, I'd reckon one could do that with an iPhone as well, but with a device as large as an iPad, I have a hard time imagining operating that one handed without completely giving up on input to portions of the screen.

Well for book reading I could see someone adding what amount to flip buttons that'd allow you to one hand reading and viewable icon selections.

The idea behind a Tablet PC has been to overcome the user interface limitations of traditional I/O devices versus paper, which you can run into easily with notes taking, art, etc. In effect the idea is to render paper an obsolete medium, while exploring the possibilities a touch interface opens up. So it doesn't seem reasonable that you'd have too much emphasis on making it easier to operate by tapping along the edge.

Personally I'm happy that Apple has made tablet technology more prominent and encouraged its development into realms well beyond the more modest original concept. On the other hand the guy who has routinely cracked OS X in PWN2OWN in ridiculously short periods of time indicates Apple has continued to have nonexistent security, while now adding monitoring devices and a built in modem. That's not a good combination.

It has been said... "You can't argue with success."

I'm glad to see that so many in this thread are dedicated to trying to prove the axiom wrong. :-)

It's a rich people thing. *shrugs*

Us pulpers can view the net quite efficiently with our eight year old Presarios.
Step 1: Buy a Nook Color
Step 2: Root

You just saved yourself $450.

Personally, my use of the CR-48 has my desire for a tablet fairly low. I have a dedicated PC for gaming, editing, and other major tasks, an android phone to have the internet in my pocket, and a netbook for anything that requires typing or a larger screen than my phone. I'm already more or less one product more than I should probably "need", but a tablet seems like it's edging into a niche that seems really redundant, especially at the current price point(rooted Nook Color is the most tempting). Granted, I own an ereader because I like to read books, so perhaps web content, games, and mutlimedia apps fall into a similar mental niche for most people.

It's been forwarded to mister Jobs. He told us to thank you for being so insightful and helpful.

orcishgamer: Try looking at phandroid (http://phandroid.com/ ) and see if you can suss out the model numbers.
Um... "There were no phones found with that information" >_>

http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android - has some photos of models though and while I've seen some of them, I never knew they were Android (again, due to lack of mention of that fact in available in-store materials/labels). I'm also surprised to see that most carriers apparently have Android models. Yet as I say, I've only known of one to advertise the fact (albeit poorly). Either way, I've learnt sommat new.

If you were in the opticians without your glasses because they were being fixed, how were you reading the paper?
