Just watched Yahtzee reviewing Duke Nukem Forever, hilarious.
He just goes so enthusiastically over it.

I'm so glad he's telling the truth, people who were all "bawww it's closed." needed to stfu and realize this game should have come out a long time ago or they should have closed a long time ago.
thankfully only the dnf team is dead.
Well, while I always did hope something would eventually come of DNF, Yahtzee really says it like it is: RIDICULOUS!
After watching this, I have to say that he is right on the mark.
This pretty much sums up my take on the matter. It's really hard not to just want to smack the people who were supposedly "working" on this thing, as well as the people who kept insisting that the finished product, when it finally arrived, would be worth waiting for.
Yahtzee, as always, is 110% on the mark.

ahh zero puntation rocks as always
His style is not one that appeals to everyone but most of the time he makes valid points and most of those points were valid.
There's a point in project management where you have to have the balls to kill something that isn't working, it sounds like that should have happened in year 3 rather than year 12. Much in the same way that if your child isn't a straight A student by grade 3, you should drown them in a puddle so they don't mess up grades 4-12 for everyone else
brilliant, brilliant I tell ya!
Haven't enjoyed his review that much since painkiller. LOVE IT!
and i so agree!
Sigh. People are so easily swayed, even by a single word.
'Tragedy' aside, I think it's really besides the point -- it is sad the game didn't get made, I think we can all agree. Maybe the team were slackers, but none of us really know -- the publisher and developer have conflicting stories. In either case, it's not like they weren't making or publishing other Duke games during that period, which is what everyone acts like.
3D seem like a passionate team to me that would've made the game if it was plausible.
That said, I quite enjoyed the review. :P

They had 12 years to make the goddamn game. 12 years. they were slackers. or lairs. Either they did work on DNF and just slacked off
or they lied all the time they are working on it and just made screens in photoshop.
You don't work on game for 12 years. four years. sure. I can even understand six years (a big problem. problem solved but engine is outdated. start programming from beginning)
I am personally very happy that 3d realms got shafted. I feel sorry for all those normal people who lost jobs but the company deserves it. as well as being sued.
great review.

Exactly.
Really, how much benefit of the doubt are we expected to extend these people? A dozen years of blandishments and promises and for what? Absolutely nothing. A few teaser screenshots here and there, but absolutely nothing of any real substance. Playing a public who was genuinely enthused for a game and dragging them along, using that enthusiasm to keep them glued to the brand, keep their loyalty and then ultimately reward them with nothing.
Personally, I had no real loyalty to 3D Realms, but I imagine this stings for those who did, and while I don't really hold much stock in the notion of "fanboy entitlement" in this case I think it's justified. This game studio built up a fairly loyal fanbase and then ultimately threw that out the window by slacking off to the point where they were unable to come up with not just a poor product, but no product at all. Yahtzee's "review" hits the nail on the head: any decently competent studio could have put out -something- in a quarter of the amount of time. These people produced nothing.
And one can argue all they like about a desire to put out a quality product, but the end result is that they still ended up with nothing, and it's hard to say that nothing is better than something. It's equally hard to say that a hypothetical awesome something is better than the nothing we actually received.
DNF was becoming a joke by the turn of the millennium, 5 years later it was "oh, they're still making that? I'd forgotten all about it" and by 2009 it was a running gag much in the same manner as Jack Thompson where even reputable news sources were cracking jokes in the announcement of a magnificent new trailer, screenshot or amazing new innovation where they claim to have added 3 more pixels to the length of dukes hair. These announcements with nothing to back them up did nothing but destroy any credibility the final product would have had to the point where they'd have to ship it with strippers who loved to give blowjobs for people to buy it (other than the 5 obsessive fans and the few hundred thousand people afflicted with train wreck curiosity)
If they were a good team, they's have made it in 3-4 years.
If they were a good team who suffered major setbacks they'd have made it in 5-6 years.
If they were well managed they'd probably not have had major setbacks
If they were well managed the game would have been finished or killed by the end of year 6 at the latest
None of these things happened, they produced nothing and went out of business. Fuck 'em & good riddance.

Not seeing any evidence to back up any of these claims.
You're all acting like they were fucking everyone around for 12 years on purpose. What reason would they have to do this? It's (clearly) detrimental to them as a business, in terms of profit and reputation.

Now we shall wait for the review for Starcraft: Ghost.
