I always thought it would be nice to introduce some parodic quests in RPGs (perhaps as an easter egg). For example:

"The Quest of the Gods' garments"

Throughout the adventure several NPCs make comments to you (the adventurer) about a fabulous set of garments abandoned by the Gods that will provide superhuman powers if found. Later, a track will take you to a dungeon full of enemies. After defeating them, you will find a very old chest marked with the sacred runes of the Gods. And when opened ,it pours a wonderful golden light...

... which happens to be a huge cloud of luminescent moths. Once dispersed, you find that under the dust in the chest are only two or three usable clothes, although with many holes. Dirty used clothes, by the way. Digging again in the dust, you finally find a ancient note of the Gods for the laundry, and a pamphlet calling for a strike by the goblins cleaners in the dungeon.

The final joke will be that if you place the clothes on yourself, you will get increased stats, but look like a ragged vagabond and everyone either will laugh at your appearance or covers his/her nose due to the bad smell...

Not sure if your friend can use this as a quest, but perhaps could be part of the lore, as a cynical tale about getting what you want.

If so, the storyteller might add that the adventurer couldn't take off that clothes ever again. :D

Happy birthday, friend. I do hope you have a good-un. As for my idea:

A setting I'd love to see in a game (I'm assuming your friend's project is indeed a game, do correct me if I'm wrong) is perhaps a more or less standard fantasy kingdom, but one where an outside industrialised power is looking to subjugate them. As you've probably guessed, I'm drawing inspiration from the situation a lot of non-western societies found themselves in during the 19th century.

I have to say, as long as you avoid using the standard hero's journey for a plot (player and a few NPC mates have to single handedly defeat the BIg Bad, usually with some magical mcguffin), there's a lot of interesting things you could do with it.

Oh, and I'm more than happy for your friend to use my idea, should she so desire.

I don't know if this is appropriate enough, But this will probably be one of the most far-fetched ideas I have come up with.

In a world where technology is constantly being welded together with magic, there have been many creations that attempted to fly the skies in the past, of them all only one was given an award for it to stop flying.

This piece of wonderful machinery was known as the Hurricane wheel. Powered by a push in magic, this wonderful piece of machinery worked itself into a mighty circulation of winds and breezes, eventually escalating to full sized Hurricane in no time. The Hurricane wheel itself looked like a regular wooden boat with a giant wheel underneath it, the giant wheel however was made of 4 thick tubes of oil bound by magic and strengthened by the winds to become an unbreakable tool of propulsion.

Tales of the Hurricane wheel have always either been the butt of inventor jokes, or a warning to those that want get creative in their inventions, but never has it been criticised for it's task in flying. Inventors that tried to create the Hurricane wheel have always wound up with one major problem.. Electricity was always a catalyst for a spectacular explosion from the hurricane wheel due to how the wheel was made of pure oil bound in magic, inventors have tried to replace this oil with other materials that were less combustible but have failed, oil always carried a special mix of components that supported the wheel in it's flying.

That was until one fateful day an infamous but not so diligent magical inventor called Nistrogen met a crazed juice vendor with an obsession for power.

Nistrogen life was never the same ever since that day.
Lots of orange juice was also involved.

As for my idea (albeit small), I always thought it would be witty if a community of hobbits/gnomes/kinder/munchkins etc. would live in a town/area named Worcester Shire. And their claim to fame would be making delectable sauce for different types of food.

Hmmm, I wonder if there could be some truth to it. :)

Indeed it would. Any sort of contribution is a valid entry. If you've got an entire map, it could end up being the first bunch of new lands to be unveiled.

It's actually a roleplay forum, but it would be pretty cool as an episodic game where you can play through the big world events. It's a possibility for the future.

With regards to your idea, that'd probably be a good way of introducing a shift in the tech level or setting which because of how she's set it up, is quite likely to happen.
