Guys, does anyone here know if the steam version of the original XCOM works in Win 7 x64 without issues? I prefer to ask here than the steam forums.

DOSBox, should work, though you may have to mess a bit with its configuration.
I have it and it works.
I have X-COM on GG and it works perfectly out of the box on my Win 7 x64. Since the Steam version is apparently the same (DRM free too), it should be fine.

Yeah I saw that thread and followed the steps for the improved music thing, but it's not working with music for me. Even tried converting to .ogg and editing the .ini file accordingly. Anyway, classic version is fine.

Thanks to everyone who replied!
Wow.. The depth of this game is AMAZING. I always heard about it but only now bought and played it. Very impressed.

edit:
PS: Would be great to get this on GOG with some extra goodies :)

First we need to get Take Two/2K on-board. I'd be surprised if it didn't happen eventually, but that may still be a while off.

I had problems with the music as well, until I renamed the tracks. The track names of the PSX music I had downloaded was in the following form:

X-COM UFO Defense PSX - 01 - Geoscape1

Removing the rest and simply renaming it "Geoscape1" seemed to do the trick.
