Maybe it will turn out to be a decent tactical shooter...Hell, something like Star Wars : Republic Commando set in the X-Com universe could actually be an interesting game.
I always wanted to play XCOM: Alliance.... at the time it sounded really cool. Proper squad based combat with decent AI.. a mix of Rainbow6/Swat and Space Hulk.
I guess in the meantime we've had a lot of squad based shooters, but at least back then it sounded cool. And reasonably true to the spirit of the originals. (members that were resources, doing research to upgrade weapons and get new tech, etc...)

CrashToOverride: Lol Fallout 3 was bad? Lol.

Fallout 3 is total shit. In fact it's a buffalo shitspray. That's when a buffalo takes a shit while it's tail is swinging, spreading the muck in all directions.
what if it played like Valkyria Chronicles? That wouldn't be so bad imo
Then again I have never actually played old school x-com games and I dont know much about the series gameplay (other than it's strategy based), so maybe that won't work either

Actually, Valkyria Chronicles and X-Com are kinda similar, in terms of gameplay. So that could have worked quite well.

bansama: I'll forgo judgment on this until after its released. You never know, it may actually be an enjoyable game if people can just get over the name its given.

Thing is though, that rarely seems to happen in the gaming community. Getting over the name, that is.
Well, if one doesn't listen to ravaging fanbase, some of these projects turn out well, so we'll see what happens next :-)
FPS eh?
Probably because they can't make a better one than the original.

Give me an FP and TP game where I can explore my base, build my base, initiate research/purchase weapons, armour and items by talking to NPCs, recruit soldiers, having tactical battles as a shooter where I can directly control squadmates or let the AI handle them and also capture aliens back for research then I know I'll enjoy it.

Thats certainly true, look at Rainbow Six Vegas, it would have been a good game, perhaps even a great game if it had been called something else

So true. And that can only be summed up with: =(
Just as I was clicking on the thread's title, I knew it was going to be a disappointment. After they fucked up my Star Trek world, now this. Like it would be impossible to come out with a name that doesn't have the words xcom in it. Very pissed off. I hate "reboot" used for anything.

Why do I get the feeling this is going to make Enforcer look like a proper XCOM title by comparison?
An XCOM game with tactical FPS elements could work. But only if the rest of the game was true to form. The base building, the research, captured aliens, outfitting your squads and so forth. In fact, playing a first person defensive mission in a base you designed could be very cool. But this clearly isn't going to be that game.
For people comparing this to Fallout 3 this is not in anyway similar. Fallout 3 was still an RPG, just in an FPS perspective. It's not really any worse than Bioware moving from isometric 2D to dynamic 3D. This is making an entirely different game and using the name to sell it. Might as well just call it X-Com: Modern Warfare and be done with it.
No sir I don't like this, not one bit.

I don't know how they gonna implement mind-control portion of XCom into first person shooter.
Maybe you'll start team killing instead, just like the turn-based predecessors.
Or if you panic, you just run towards cover and crouch for 20-30secs.
Probably like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in new Family Guy episode.
