"They're also pushing the "suspenseful narrative", which pits you -- an FBI agent -- against the unknown but growing enemy force."
So... Not only will it be a completely different type of game from the original, but the XCOM agency isn't even in the game? What the fuck are they calling it XCOM for???

To cash in on the name alone, much like the new Bionic Commando.

But as Chautemoc pointed out, the people who actually know the name will hate it, while the rest won't care. So what's the point?
Also, while I haven't played the new Bionic Commando, I did have the impression that it was actually a proper updated remake of the original game?

The statement following that part in the press release is, " True to the roots of the franchise..." (Then it's a bunch of PR speak)
:)
The name that would only appeal to people who grew up playing the game? Seems less profitable to buy the name and use it for minimal gain and maximum hate rather than just making it megasuperawesomealiendeathkill!!!
The character might start as an FBI agent and get recruited into XCOM at the end of the tutorial after he stumbles into an XCOM operation and handles the weirdness well. Like in Torchwood or Men In Black

The one they released for the consoles is TERRIBLE, but the download-able "ReArmed" version is a true remake.

Perhaps you're thinking of Rearmed. That was good. Consensus seemed to be the other wasn't very good.
Edit: what he said.
Rearmed sold very well too which is nice. Not sure about the other.

Then I guess I AM thinking of ReArmed ;-)
The saddest part is that they could redo xcom spectacularly on the xbox.
-Super pretty graphics and animations with people moving and taking cover fluidly
-Keep the turn based combat but make it slightly streamlined depending on the difficulty level, easy just has set action points, medium has variable action points with the amount of equipment carried and hard is proper xcom with stamina and everything
There's plenty of scope for putting everything on the controller and making the interface workable but noooooo, console gamers don't want that, they want FPS'! Just look at the sales! Its not like they have games OTHER than FPS' to fucking buy! Well ok, FPS', 3rd person gears of war knockoffs and action god of war beat em up knockoffs
I'll forgo judgment on this until after its released. You never know, it may actually be an enjoyable game if people can just get over the name its given.
True, I'd be hard to top XCOM: Enforcer. >_>

Yeah, all I'm hoping for from this is "Enforcer, but not mediocre and tedious."
In my perfect world, this is a true squad-based tactical game, with creature and level design by GSC.
I'm really not seeing what 2k hopes to do by using the X-COM name. The original X-COM was released back in 1994, the last game in the series proper (X-COM: Apocalypse) released back in 1997. Folks who remember these games fondly are mostly going to be of an age and disposition where they aren't going to just rush out and buy an X-COM FPS just based on the name (I'd actually expect the opposite to be true). Not to mention that spinning off the name into other genres was already done with Interceptor and Enforcer, and if memory serves neither of those were received particularly well.
>XCOM FPS
>By Bioshock 2 devs
Fuck it, I'm out.

Oh no. I was expecting the original irrational team to do this game...
Now to swallow a BioShock2'ed version of X-COM... I doubt that they'll make it tactical, since this is for the xboxers, and pc.
And if irrational is working on a new IP, then it isn't the SWAT5 that we are hoping for.
This and the apocalypse now news made me sad, today. :(
