If you can deal with the badly aged graphics of Terror from the Deep, you'll understand why there was so much anticipation for the modern rendition. My recommendation is to only buy the 1st as subsequent releases aren't as good.

UFO Alien Invasion is coming along quite nicely which is a fan creation/collaboration in the spirit of the original x-com's and it is completely free although its always in development but it runs pretty great.

The original X-com's are classics though and are great with an awesome atmosphere. The 3rd one is a bit different though in style. I had fun with all of them though although i will ignore the existence of that 2001 3rd person shooter version that came out. I loved Microprose...so many great memories with there games...X-com, MoM, MOO, the sid meier line of games...great imes.

You know, I'm always amazed by those few quality games some (should I say obsessed?) fans come up with. Now that's dedication.

Yeah, Microprose was a publisher of some truly great games in its day. Ah, sweet memories.

The first one is still a "different enough" game to warrant another playthrough. But it is old and it shows. Not talking about the graphics, they are still great (imo). But a lot of interface improvements have been made in the past 15 years which you will miss in the original X-Com.

Xenonauts will be released in a few weeks, which is probably cery close to the original with more modern features.

Considering you can get the original for just about nothing, I would at least try it.

And I must say that Apocalypse is the best out there. The complexity is stunning. Very underrated. People didn't like it back then because it was "to modern" and made "to many changes". Yeah, that mentality hurt gaming already back then.

If I only knew how to actually get into the game. Frankly, it confuses the hell out of me.

What is the issue, I will gladly guide you ;-). Even with all the remakes of the original coming out, this game is still unique and very worth playing.

Maybe try reading a "beginners guide" I actually only became interested in the game after casually reading a walkthrough on the john. (Yes, back then, young and impressionable I was part of the "they changed it and now it sucks" crew. Apocalypse was one of the games that "healed" me).

I can confirm, Apocalypse is a great game.
I admit i was addicted to it on my second try :)

To cut a long story short, everything. I haven't even figured out how to intercept a bloody UFO, and that's after struggling with the manual for a short while. The interface feels even more deliberately obtuse than that of the first game.

But hey, I got into Dwarf Fortress; one of these days, I'm going to crack Apocalypse, too.
