Shalgroth: Bring the Bill of Rights. Our constitution sucks. No constitutional right to free speech? Seriously?
avatar
DarrkPhoenix: Rights guaranteed under the law only mean something if the judiciary, and ultimately the people themselves, are willing to smack down anyone in government who tries to infringe on those rights. Years of "free speech zones", "speech codes" in public universities, and so forth have shown that the courts and most of the citizenry in the states merely pay lip service to free speech. Unless, of course, we're talking about a corporation's right to "speak" by giving large amounts of money to politicians; in that case the courts are fully behind free speech.

Oh don't be so cynical, every american I've met has passionately defended the right to free speech
just so long as that speech doesn't disagree with them...

After reading your first line I was about to reply with the exact same bit of snark in your second line, but it seems you beat me to it.

TheCheese33: I've learned from movies that the American is always the solution to this problem, so I should fly down there and try to raise a protest army. We could make weight jokes since his name is close to the diet program Atkins, and if enough Australians are in revolt, we can get rid of this guy.

@Aliasalpha: He's a narcissist, has a persecution complex, and a likes to falsely accuse people of being criminals. He was born to be in politics. Or law. Or institutionalised.
Actually.. Can we call a CAT team on him?

Well seeing as i'm in the ACT, we already have a Bill of Rights
So all I can say to the rest of Australia is "sucks to your asmarr"
It seams every week, someone from my state wants to do something even more insane/stupid/corrupt than the last. There's been a lot happening the last few months. Not to mention everything at the country level.
Atkinson said he would move to appeal this rule/law. After the election. (*yeah right*) Thanks to all the negative publicity.
I'll be glad when he's out of politics. But then, there's another dozen to go here. >:|
Its a good bit of ammo for gamers 4 croydon though.
Hmm if I read the article correctly (and they quickly glance over this), it's ONLY on one site?

No, its more
"The law will affect anyone posting a comment on an election story on The Advertiser's AdelaideNow website, as well as other Australian news sites."
And even if it was just one site, that would still be the camels nose in the tent (or whatever top of the slippery slope metaphor you prefer) since the people passing this LEGAL REQUIREMENT were not the ones who own the site and so have no right to dictate its requirements.
As a metaphor, imagine if the polish government suddenly passed a law requiring GOG to publish names and addresses of its forum posters

I just read in today's mX that Atkinson has withdrew his support.....
and will remove it AFTER he gets reelected... Or has he changed that stance too?

Ah yeah, didn't notice that before. Yep, after the election... -_-;
Then its an election promise.
Oh well, its as good as done, I mean who would betray such a sacred trust?
First they take away my small boob porn than they stop me from ripping on people anonymously. WTF is going on!
Don't forget!
Restricting the sale of R18 DVDs to a 'Caution: May Cause Offence" area of the shop (or, putting a plain cover with just the title on it). link
Aaaaand.
Making it a crime to lie about your age on the internet, if the conversation (even a forum thread, like this here) involves a person under 18. link
Wonderful country, I love my state :) (/obvious.sarcasm) To my other Australian GOGers? What is your state like?

Today, I've had a dream.
A dream about world where no moron would walk freely.
