Well after the holiday sale I think Steam is getting publishers throwing themselves at them for weekend sales.
Especially considering how many games they sell to people who would have never bought the game in the first place and then people buy the games and play them for like 30 mins lol.
I know one publisher was told they had to wait for like three months before they could get listed for a weekend sale. For got who it was now though.

Sorry - I will stick with GOG even at those prices.
It is necessary to validate every Steam game online before it can be played, although an offline mode is available. There are no alternate methods of activation such as via telephone or fax, which causes the system to deny access to those without Internet connections. According to the Steam Subscriber Agreement, Steam's availability is not guaranteed and Valve is under no legal obligation to release an update disabling the authentication system in the event that Steam becomes permanently unavailable.

Steam hasn't awoken.. it does that sort of thing all of the time (this isn't the first time XCom series has been offered ridiculously cheap).
GoG doesn't need to compete with Steam - the GoG versions of classic games work on more modern PC's than the Steam versions of the same games.

There are two games that I know of that arn't crappy ubisoft ports that don't work on Steam. Slamit Pinball and Stubbs the Zombie. The latter is an Apyr port, so that's nothing suprising.
GOG is better than Steam, when all other things are considared, as simply a game downloading service, but Steam almost always has cheaper prices (Except that Interplay fiasco), plus you get Steamcloud, achievements, community, etc.
For what you get, the $5 Torchlight deal beats *Everything* on GOG, objectively, in terms of value and best-buy status.
