BadDecissions: I often don't like English-language visual novels. In particular, I wish more of them would find their own visual identity instead of aping Japanese anime-style.
Try Moacube's:

* Cinders (Trailer/Demo Available)
* Solstice (Trailer Available/Demo-for-Preorders)

IAmSinistar: If GOG exercises good quality control and the VNs have enough gameplay, then I don't see any reason why they couldn't be added to the catalogue.
Depends what kind of gameplay you're expecting as by definition the most gameplay a pure visual novel can have is branching storyline (and kinetic visual novels don't have even that, they are novels after all. Obviously there are (plenty of) hybrids that combine visual novel story telling style with gameplay from another genre.

And I definately would want to see VNs on GOG, both original Japanese and Western copycats. Some quality controll will be needed thought, as there's plenty of crap VNs out there (but that can be said about all game genres) and pricing is bit of a problem from GOG.com point of view as VNs tend to be overpriced due to size of their (perceived) audience (and due to japanese VNs tending to be fully narrated by professional voice actors).

Anyone wanting to try some free (fan made) VNs should check Ren'Py games list. There's over 600 (of various quality) to pick from.

A good starting point could be "don't take it personnaly babe, it just ain't your story" by Christine Love where you play as an adult an as such, it gives some perspectives on the story (and it's short, 2-3 hours for a plauytrough). On the contrary, I wouldn' recommend the widely acclaimed Katawa Shoujo for starters or people like me who dislikes the anime genre.

Oh yeah, that reminds me that Digital A Love Story was really a great game for people who knew the era of BBS boards :)

That looks pretty good, thanks for the recommendation. I notice it's "A NaNoRenO release". I had to laugh, having participated in NaNoWriMo a few times. So the visual novelist have their own equivalent now. :D
I support VNs on GOG 100%.
As long as they stay away from the porn stuff, which would only damage GOG's reputation.
(And if we need any tentacle-based games here, let's start from The Day of the Tentacle...)

Now, the situation being what it is, I don't think we are going to see any commercial Japanese VNs here any time soon. Or at least those would be imcomplete versions, without Japanese language. Then again, we have already had German adventures without German language, so it would fit the pattern...

The most likely thing to happen is that when the Kickstarted VNs appear, some of them will end up on GOG.
Just guessing here, but some VN like MegaTokyo could end up here on GOG, whenever that is finished. Being a backer, I'm also tempted to be biased to think that... :-)

GOG already has tentacle game, Octodad: Dadliest Catch. ;-p
I would have to say I hope these items do not arrive at GOG. I checked out a bunch of links in this thread, and I have to say, it looks like these are just comic books with very low levels of quality control. I don't see how dumping a bunch of this drek onto GOG could possibly be part of their business model.

If we're going to clutter GOG with non-games like these, GOG might as well start selling books, or music, or furniture, or exotic house pets.

But we already have "non-games" like Gone Home so i think adding Visual Novels on GOG shouldn't be a problem.

Faith: A cold day in hell when VN's being sold here at GOG.
Well, I hope you have your winter gear ready, because we already know that Hatoful Boyfriend is coming to GOG. =P

On topic...speaking personally, I would have no issues with VNs being available on GOG, at least the non-eroge/hentai sort. In fact, if that were to happen, I might even consider buying some of them. However, If I'm honest, I have to wonder if there is really much of an audience for these type of games here. I mean, if people around here aren't interested in ports of arcade games, VNs have even less of a chance to succeed. Plus, since most developers of VNs are Japanese (and Japanese devs/publishers LOVE their DRM), chances are that most of them wouldn't be interested in releasing VNs on GOG in the first place.

If there were VNs here, that would naturally bring new people to GOG, and it could inspire others to try out new genres too.

It is also probable that many adventure fans would find VNs enjoyable. After all, early Sierra games can be counted as VNs by stretching the definition just a bit. Leisure Suit Larry would even qualify as a dating sim.
Anyone know of any visual novels based on a popular book, made into a VN ?
I mentioned '39 Steps' by The Story Mechanics, earlier in the thread. That would be an example of what I'm looking for. A profession conversion, based on a well known novel.

Thanks for the suggestion. I just had a look at their site. The artwork looks very well done. They have a demo, I'm d/l'ing it now.
Anyone have any other suggestions? Particularly with voice acting. There doesn't seem to be many English language , non-anime choices.

Thx again. I'll check out those too. :) I also just found one called the Outbreak series. Seems promising.
