It's a tough question. I do have some friends that dabble in making original English language visual novels. Some of them are simple and just for fun and others are really quality. Whether they would sell on GOG, I'm not sure. I was surprised to see Long Live the Queen here. It's not my personal favourite, but it really makes me happy to see all the positive comments and to know that people are enjoying it : )

Moacube's Cinders was a beautiful game and I'm looking forward to their new release Solstice, as well.

Some other small companies that have released some solid freeware and commercial titles that come to mind are:

Sakevisual. Jisei mystery series and Backstage Pass etc ...

Cyanide Tea. Stories about whatever. I liked "The Elevator". Well, I've liked them all so far. A fair amount of romance. I'm looking forward to "Break Chance Memento" because it's a mystery involving time travel!

Winter Wolves has several releases, as well. Some stat raising, some pure VNs and some pseudo rpgs like Planet Stronghold and Loren the Amazon Princess. Sadly the "combat" on the latter two just doesn't do it for me.

FYI, I don't play Hentai games, so none of my recommendations would involve any of that. Just mystery games and love stories, mostly. Anything with a good story. lol

To sum it up, I'd be happy if GOG decided to add to its variety by including VNs in the catalogue. Obviously it'll come down to the bottom line, but even if none of these games become the next mega hit it may open up a whole new genre to some gamers and, to me, that seems worth it!

I'd like to see Aselia the Eternal / Eien no Aselia released here, I think it was the only non-adult game JAST published. And ideally the clean version of Utawarerumono, as far as I know the PC version is adult-only but maybe there was a release with the changes from the PS2 version.

Yes, definitely. I really like visual novels and GOG is my favorite place to buy games, so I'd love to see them together. Ever 17 is one of my two favorite games that I've ever played and there are several other visual novels in my list of favorite games. I agree with the comments that GOG's role is purely as a seller not a localizer and I could see GOG having a problem with the price point of most visual novels. Recent visual novel releases on Steam have shown that even this niche market can still produce titles that sell 10,000 copies, so it isn't as small as a lot of people think.

In theory, yes.

In practice, I often don't like English-language visual novels. In particular, I wish more of them would find their own visual identity instead of aping Japanese anime-style.

(Nothing against anime; something against "Developing an interesting style is hard, so I'll just give everyone giant eyes. The kids are into that these days, right?)

In fairness I believe a lot of the devs are genuinely enamoured with anime, not just the art style but also the conventions and tropes. The particular style they employ has its own presumptions and coded shorthand, just as a typical fantasy RPG does with elves and orcs. So they are building upon an established framework, one that situates the gamer in a comfortable setting with expected types of characterisation.

No doubt some devs are just cynically exploiting a fashion for pure marketability. But I do believe a number of the developers are sincere in their emulation of the style, even if they are so removed from the culture that spawned it that their attempts are just a pale reflection. There is an existing subculture now around anime, and that is what they are tying into.

That being said, I'm always glad to see new and fresh styles being developed as well. I'm not a big fan of genre works of any kind, and much prefer an original voice when possible.

Interested in VN always. I really like them as a whole, despite being very noob in that category.. Analogue, a Hate Story is a great one, Phoenix Wright games are awesome VN / point & click, that latest Steam release of Sakura Spirit with sexy fox girls is quite funny and well drawn by a woman artist..

I would like more on GOG, though I tend to buy new games from Steam, and GOG only the oldies..
