I was browsing through the wishlist and came along with some posts suggesting the idea.

I'm conscious of the logistical problems it would bring (licensing, translating, small market, specially small market in the west, companies actively not caring about the western market, etc.), not even mentioning the "hentai game" reputation. I understand why GOG would prefer to keep its distance.

Nevertheless, some of the best games I've ever play are visual novels. Clannad, anyone? And what about Katawa Shoujo!? I will go to the grave defending these games (even if not perfect) are art, plain and simple. Even then, I have doubts about them belonging here: the games GOG normally offers are definitely classic and art, but of a radically different kind, more videogame than literature. Even then, I can't help but like the idea of GOG offering other kinds of "classic".

I know, I know, we already have Long Live the Queen, which is definitely a visual novel, and extending the definition a bit (ok, a lot), games like To the Moon and Unrest could pass, but would you want more "less game, more story" experiences, like those of "typical" Japanese visual novels?. Also, the adult content issue, which I would like to see discussed more here and in other places. There's a lot of opinions on this, and that's why I would like to ask :) .
I only played Katawa and liked it. It's not really my thing, but I have nothing against them. Honestly, if GOG believes RTS is too niche, I wouldn't hold my breath.

Yet, I think Hatoful Boyfriend is slated to come here shortly (wasn't it supposed to have been here yesterday (August 21st))

Katawa Shoujo was the first one one I've played/read whatever & loved it I've gone through a few (all freeware)

Personally, I like a variety & I don't have an issue with adult entertainment (with the possible exception that I may not have enough =) )

though VN's should not be "auto" assumed to all be "adult" flavored
Fate/stay Night is my favorite VN, great stuff.
Visual novels...

I want to say, no. I'm not against them, but they are the wrong genre and target audience. They would be much better deployed on android and tablets where you can sit back and read it wherever you are, on the bus, in the car, lunch break etc. But on the computer? It's about the same as reading through gaming books in PDF on the computer, it's too restrictive to be comfortable... You can do it, but i wouldn't recommend it.

There are always a few douchebags who hate them, but i like them personally. The ONLY problem you might find is the pricing (for non freeware ones) - looking at Desura, there are plenty which charge $25+ for them each.....

I personally cant handle them on tablet or mobile - screen is too damn small.. same for ebooks :(

I had a blast playing "The royal trap" a few months ago, so yeah, I'd like to see a few (good) VNs here. It would add a little diversity to the offer.
I don't think it will happen, though. But one can only hope. After all, we got "long live the queen", which is a pretty (nice) niche game :)

And about what you said about licensing and translating japanese games : That's not GOG's job. GOG is a store, they don't alter games or create new ones, they just ensure it works on modern platforms and sell them. Bringing those games to the western audience is the work of a publisher (like what XSeed did for the JRPG "Legend of heroes", that appeared on GOG a few weeks ago.)
GOG simply sells those western version, they do not create them.

I hear you. In order to read EBooks or pdf's or comics or anything, i end up usually turning the tablet side-ways (landscape) and having to scroll up/down a lot... It works, but it isn't optimal...

Ereaders and simple tablets will be better when you have one the size of the screen for standard paper (11x8). Actually in all honesty i'd like to see a gray-scale epaper the size of a movie poster or larger; Then have the image updated every so often from a small computer. (since some e-papers don't need electricity to store the result of the image, it could be quite good for a lot of things...)

Well, the western VNs are the work of small devs with a very limited audience. I understand they don't want to lower the price too much if they expect to live on them (like any pro wants to live from his work)
I'm not sure "lower price = much more sales = more profit" in those cases where the target audience is limited. I might be wrong, though.
Not something that would interest me but I wouldn't mind them being here if there a market for them.

As for the adult content, GOG already have games with adult content (sex, nudity etc.) so I don't think it would have been a barrier.

Yep, would like to see more VNs here.
As for adult content - hmm, I'm not sure, I'm not a big fan of hentai/eroge (not that I'm totally against :p), but I don't think GOG is the best place for this type of VNs.

I disagree, I much prefer reading visual novels on the computer than on my phone (the screen is much too small). Of course, I don't have a tablet, so I can't really compare those - the e-book reader (with e-ink screen) is pure bliss for reading books though, as long as they don't have colourful images as a main feature, which visual novels do (screen handles 16 levels of gray or thereabouts).

Yeah impossible on a phone... Then again phones are overkill anymore... If it had a video output you could plug to a TV and then use the phone to navigate, it would still be pretty cool...

I've read a comic book series (]Spawn as i recall) and looked over images on 16 colors of grey. Looked really really good; Although it had to do 2 phases to get the image to come up right. Maybe it was just the e-ink or e-reader i was using to ensure it looked good. Not sure... Anyways it was still a good product to use, even if it is in gray scale. Honestly after half an hour, you forget there was ever color and it doesn't make a difference to you unless you already have seen it in color. I say for the advantages of e-ink as mentioned, color displays are way overrated...

But then again i'm a person who goes for function before eye-candy...
Well why not if there is a market for this gog should sell it. Otherweise I would not buy a graphical novel since they don't interest me and im a person that prefers real books/ebooks in comparison to these things.

Personally, no.

But I know that there are some people who like those, so... if they were available here, I would be fine with that. :)
