Yeah, this is the latest crazy event I want to do for charity, but I'm not alone this time - the forum legend, Akwater, will also be participating, so we already have the foundations for a truly international GOG Charity Event!

We need more people though (8 - 14 altogether), so just putting the feelers out to see if anyone else would be interested in participating. I've already done a fair bit of research and the climb itself has to take place in "dry season", so the proposed dates at the moment would be:

August / September / October 2011
March / April / May 2012

Please note that climbing Kilimanjaro takes 8 - 10 days (including an extra day for acclimitisation), depending on which route up the mountain we opt for, so you'd need to take at least 2 weeks off work / school / college.

Prices start at around £900 / $1,500 (does not include flights), but there's plenty of time for fundraising, so apart from the initial deposit there should be minimal cost to participants.

So, does anyone fancy it? Surely meeting Akwater is incentive enough? :)
Sorry, I think I am the worst climber in the world :)
Well, I'm intrigued, and tentatively interested. There's a lot of things I have to think about, but all in all, I like that idea.
It'd be awesome to meet you guys in person and I'd love to do this, but I doubt I would get the time off work, we have fixed holidays and all that.

I also never have that much money to spend at once and I would either have to bring my significant other (who is possibly the most opposite to the mountain-climbing type you can get) or spend 2 weeks away from her (this would make me sad and thus, even less of a pleasant person to spend 2 weeks with :P)

Also, I'm not a particularly active person either so I would probably be dying 99% of the trip :P

There is no way I am or ever will be fit enough to consider something like that. But you certainly have my moral support.
Which charity?

Darling_Jimmy: Which charity?
It should be posible for individuals to raise money for their own charities, or we can choose one that everyone agrees with. Any suggestions are welcome!

My personal favourites are Help A London Child and Great Ormond Street Hospital, though these are exclusively UK based charities, so may not be appropriate.

Come and have a drink with the UK participants (just me at the moment) at the airport on departure day! :)

I think its a great idea and meeting my fellow GOGers would be fantastic, My problem would be carrying an oxygen suppy for 8-10 days. Only one of my lungs functions properly and id need about 10 years of altitude traing to be able to do it without having to carry a constant suppy of oxygen.
Well, I'd love to but I can't make any promises just yet. Put me in the maybe pile.

There's plenty of time yet - just putting out the feelers at the moment to see if there's any genuine interest. :)
Last time I climbed a mountain I broke my ankle in three places. While walking on the path.

I think it would be best for all concerned that I do not take you up on this, cheers anyway!
I'd like to say yes, but... I don't really want to die just yet.

You raise a good point. Those who are interested, should definitely read-up about Mountain Sickness. This is why acclimitisation days are necessary.
Definitely interested!
It sounds awesomely fun, though I'm afraid I'd just be a liability with my diabetes.
