Yeah, that was one of my biggest problems with the movies, the Scouring of the Shire and the GTFO they did to Tom Bombadil. I know they had to cut something in a story that huge and his story line really didn't go anywhere but he was awesome, one of my favourite supporting characters.
'Old Tom Bombadil is a merry fellow, Bright blue his jacket is, and his boots are yellow. None have ever caught him yet, for Tom, he is the master.'
@ the OP, cred for not Rick Rolling us.

+1 'Old Tom Bombadil is a merry fellow, Bright blue his jacket is, and his boots are yellow. None have ever caught him yet, for Tom, he is the master.'
I was also looking forward to see the barrow-wights, although judging by the cheesy scene when Galadriel freaked out and was meant to be threatening, I can't be sure whether I'd have liked them. I guess this scene was my biggest problem with the movies. ;)
I think the Tom Bombadil story was one of the few parts that were more similar to the fairy-tale writing of The Hobbit and that might have been another reason to leave them out of the epic. Incidentally, all the parts that could also have been in The Hobbit are my favorites from the LotR books. :)

SimonG: To be fair, those were two story parts you could cut without much impact on the rest of the story. And the Scouring of the Shire wouldn't really worked in the movie. Maybe as an extra (Which I thought they did for the extended version ?) 'Old Tom Bombadil is a merry fellow, Bright blue his jacket is, and his boots are yellow. None have ever caught him yet, for Tom, he is the master.'

They did some screen testing for Tom Bombadil however, I wonder how it would have worked out in the movies.

Downrepped? Hell no! :-D
Hehe, I sent it to one of my colleagues about a year and a half ago, and it suddenly caught on big time at work. We've been listening to it every friday since. Three of the guys at the office even have Trololo T-shirts.

If that was the screen testing, I'm glad he didn't make it into the movie. ;)Wishbone

bevinator: The Scouring of the Shire was dropped entirely. The hobbits just go home and live quiet lives, and their deeds down south are never revealed, apparently. Saruman didn't even appear at all in the theatrical version of RotK. He's only (briefly) in the extended edition, and all he does is say a few lines and then gets stabbed. Apparently they ran out of time and couldn't include it. I blame Arwen.
Indeed. Otherwise, I think they are actually great adaptations of the books, although I do disagree with quite a few of the decisions made. But the removal of the scouring of the Shire (which is pretty much the moral climax of the story, showing that the Hobbits can take care of themselves without the help of others), and the ridiculous "Hollywood Love Story" expansion of Arwen's character really piss me off. I don't mind that Tom Bombadil is gone. He never had anything to do with the story anyway. I do mind that Merry and Pippin have had their back story pretty much butchered. They've gone from being intelligent, well educated, brave Hobbits who know exactly what they're getting themselves into, to a couple of ignorant hillbillies who stumble into the story completely by accident.
