Zombies have been cool since the 70s but Iately, I've noticed a huge increase in zombie related stuff.

Actually, I had the feeling it was going down again in recent years. The peak of the hype was certainly when the book was released ('06 IIRC). Back then Zombies came back in the cinema big-time and moved from "niche exploitation movies" towards mainstream.

The movie is late to the party, imo. The whole zombie craze has died down to a level of "accepted into mainstream social culture, but no longer the hot shit".


Funny, as I just said, I rather have the feeling we past the peak in around '06 - '08 ... Maybe that is because I'm also taking comics and movies into account. But I've always been a nerd in that area, so maybe it is just my skewed view on things ... who knows ...

You mean with the ResEvil movies? Yeah, I get what you mean, but I think that it's been going up again for the past couple of years, with mainstream games (Dead Island, Walking Dead), known TV series, films, and real-life occurrences (like a few months ago when some guy ate half a man's face in Florida).

I got the feeling we are now getting all the stuff that was greenlit when Zombies were the hot shit and (at least for me personally) now as they are finished, it feels like they are late for the party. Like WW Z ;-).

Sort by year. You will notice a sudden boom at the year 2011. So you were right about zombie movies being popular for over 30 years now but no sudden boom is incorrect.

I failed to notice that the year 2011 didn't have that many zombies movies but there has been a sudden boom since 2001. And that is probably what Fifeldor was talking about.

Well, zombie franchise got its peek of popularity when console gaming was popular. PSX, PS2, XBOX, all those zombie games created an trend for zombie movies.

But lately it's not that "bad" like it was before. And his comments indicated like we have a "boom" or peek right now. And that's just not true.

I think we have a slight vampire and werewolves trend lately. And we can "thank" Twilight for it :P

I'd like believe there really is a zombie boom from a generational stand point. We had the Baby Boomers, Gen X, Gen Y and now Gen Z(ombies).

I enjoyed the Max Brooks books, both WWZ and The Zombie Survival Guide. I am fairly disappointed in the way the zombie hoard is depicted in the trailer. They should have just skipped the zombie theme and did a remake of Them!. In The Zombie Survival Guide there is a section that specifically says that zombies are slow moving and unintelligent. Sure you can easily take down or out run one slow moving zombie, but you will get tired and they wont. Plus there will always be more. Fast moving zombies are scary for all the wrong reasons, they are just re-skinned aliens/vampires/werewolves/giant bugs/genetically mutated animals/foreign invasion/crazy biker gang/tribe of cannibals. Slow moving zombies can be lying dormant anywhere and may not announce their presence when they spot you. Slow moving zombies will see you running away and start shambling in that direction, possibly picking up followers along the way. It may take them a while but they can eventually catch up to you as they don't need to stop to eat or sleep. Being completely surrounded by slow moving zombies gives you plenty of time to realize what your fate is before they get to you. No other monster in folklore history has these qualities, they are what made zombies scary to begin with. If a director doesn't know how to build tension with proper zombie lore then they need to pick a different monster genre to film.
