Are there any notable World War 1 strategy games? Most about world wars seem to be centered in or around World War 2, but as it is with every aspect of the entertainment industry, I feel World War 1 get's the shaft and is often forgotten, pun intended there because many who died in World War 1 are considered part of the lost generation of that era, before they made the laws about families keeping at least one child home in a family in order for the family line to not hit a dead end. But World War 1 itself has a lot of fascinating things to express in a game and that I think could easily work if implemented. I just don't see it much.

I'm in agreement on what you say - and am lucky enough to have known a good deal of family who were in that war before they died of old age / natural causes.
My guess is though that the idea of sending so many troops to a guranteed death as a historical accuracy element of gameplay does not sit well with some - on varying sides

I suppose me mentioning family's dieing and being forgotten was a bit of pointless ramble on my end. But the game itself could be about any aspect of the war. It's just such a rich part of history. I for one loved the planes from the era. I absolutely love zeppelins and airships in general, even though they failed in following years, and as terrible as the war was, it shouldn't be forgotten and cast aside as un-important. And important events in World War 1 led to the development of World War 2.

Here's hoping more games get made for this important era in the future, especially DRM-free!

The Korean War also gets the shaft too. And the Korean War was extremely bloody and the Korean War was the closest thing to a Zombie(Infected) Apocalypse for humans. Chinese soldiers, before going to battle, would become full of opium so they wouldn't have to feel any pain. So only a head shot killed a Chinese solder, quickly. Then they charged U.S. positions, wave after wave, sometimes with clubs and pitch forks. It must of been so horrible, to not only face enemy soldiers who want to kill you but enemy soldiers who want to kill you and can't be put down right away by anything other than a head shot or grenade etc And in real life, head shots are really difficult to do when you are tired and under enemy fire.

I didn't know those things about the korean war. We never went over it in school and no one I know has ever mentioned the war at all. Another war forgotten. It's important to remember all wars because of their historical significance and how we can try and not repeat the same mistakes, so it's also about morality.

That's only really true for the western front. The eastern front was a lot more interesting, and I could image there being some good games made out of it.

There is also a game called World war 1 on GG (or at least it used to be, it does not seem like you can buy it anymore), which uses the same engine as Blitzkrieg. Sadly, it is not a very good game either.

I was reading a walkthrough for EE 1 which has a nice, albeit small, WW1 campaign, and it says at the beginning you are about to find out why WW1 was little more than a slow stagnate massacre. In reality these armies spent years blasting the hell out of each other just to move a few feet in one direction or the other. In terms of game play the war in the air offers a lot more in terms of actual fighting and that shows in all the WW1 flying games. As far as the ground war, who wants to spend all day at their computer telling your side to shell the other side, only to charge, get half your troops cut down, pull your remaining troops BACK into your trench, and start shelling again.

I hope this post doesn't come off as disrespectful to all those that served and perished in that conflict, seriously. I'm only trying to make a point about the mechanics of game play.

There seem to be a decent amount of flight sims taking place during this war. As for other games, I can only think of a handful. One game is suitably named Korea: Forgotten Conflict, and there is also an entry in the Theatre of War sears (the 3rd one, if my memory serves), that takes place during this time. Supreme Ruler 2020 (gold?) also has a scenario that focuses on this conflict, though much like Victoria 1 don't focus on WW1, and thus don't really simulate it incredibly well, Supreme Ruler don't simulate this conflict super well either.
I completely agree with you. Trench warfare in strategy games tends to be incredibly boring, often just boiling down to hammering the trenches with artillery until the enemy is weak enough for you to rush the trenches. A single line of trenches is bad enough, but when you have multiple lines of them, it just gets painfully dull.

I agree. And all the men who died during these wars, deserve, at least, to be remembered by people.

They tend to make complex, deep games. One big negative point is to release superpatches as paying gold editions. The current version of WWO has already received that treatment. Still, some just won't accept to support that business model.
