Are there any source ports for Wolf3D still being worked on? Sure, I can use DOSBox and I've also tried Wolf4SDL but both give a very purist result. Don't get me wrong, I'd still play with the good old pixelly 2D sprites but I really would like a better control scheme.

I had tried it in the past but as you suggested it I have just tried it again.

The good news is that it works and that I can turn off all the fancy blurring so that it looks like good old Wolfenstein 3D should, plus it has the nice strafe keys and an automap (though the latter is quite a cheat really as it shows where the secret doors are).

The bad news is that it hasn't been updated for 6 years and is still buggy. I've read it doesn't play the end of episode scenes and doesn't get past level 21 on Spear of Desting, but I encountered a bug at the exit to Spear of Destiny level 2 - it wouldn't let me press the lever to activate the exit elevator. >_<

I've read that you can customize the Wolf4SDL source files to allow strafe keys and automap so I'm going to have a look into that and see how that works.
I know it's horrible, but I actually downloaded the free Ipad version last night. It plays really well and my wife is having a lot of fun with it. Great to play a classic again.
Ah, good old Wolf3d. It's the game that officially cemented me as a PC Gamer. For my 13th or 14th birthday my parents gave me a choice - Wolfenstein 3D (of which I'd been playing the shareware copy) or a Genesis console w/ Aladdin (which I'd played at my cousin's place.) I picked Wolf3d and never looked back :)

It also happens to be the first legally acquired commercial PC game I've played.

Wolf4SDL is definitely the most popular. There's also Wolf3D Redux.

I also wrote one, but it's not really something I would recommend since I pretty much abandoned it years ago. I do have plans of doing another, better one some time. I have the beginnings of one in Java with OpenGL started actually, just on a shelf though.
Well, tried NewWolf and sure I can make it look like good old Wolfenstein 3D (apart from the texture blurred HUD) and it has a nice control scheme, but the bugs put me off. I do have the Wolf4SDL installed but I now have another solution that comes very close to what I'm after.

It all came about through messing with Blake Stone which has the same control scheme as it uses the same engine. In the GOG Blake Stone forums I found a reference to a TSR program called novert that disabled the Y-axis on the mouse.
http://www.gog.com/en/forum/blake_stone_series/mouse_config_q

I also then used DOSBox's built in key mapper to add the strafe modifier to my chosen left and right keys.

So now I don't get accidental forwards/backwards movement and I can turn with the mouse or strafe with the keyboard. However, there is still no circle strafing as pressing left or right turns on the strafe modifier and turning with the mouse would then just strafe too, but this is still a big improvement. :) Thought I'd share in case anyone else finds this useful.

Same link as in the first post. ;P

Neat idea btw. but I'd prefer a GOG release of the DOS version. o_o

Naah, I'd rather take the Steam version than one from 3D Realms, especially since I already have most id games there. But being the GOG fan I am I'd always prefer a GOG release. ;P
personally i have the Apogee version and the only difference between the steam version and the one apogee sells is the logo at the hardware test screen the steam version has an activision logo replacing the apogee one. also the steam copy has the read this cut out f1 will bring up some of that function but half of the screens are missing art.
the only thing i would like in an gog version would be an pdf of the hint manual and maybe put the GOG logo in the apogee space with an restored read this.
