Apparently the company had 4,600 workers in 2009. Woa! Can't think of any other company that is bigger... Maybe only EA.

Sadly, I found out this together with the news that they'll be releasing 600 people that worked mostly in their customer support departments.

EDIT: "we'll be offering each impacted employee a severance package and other benefits." That part is a bit good, I guess, and they'll have to option to apply to other positions, but it is sad to see so many people leaving.

Just like most big US banks employ 50,000 or more people, most of them are in the lowest level of jobs, playing phone jockey or whatever. Blizzard's staff is probably nearly 4000 support folks with 600 people who do what you imagine a Blizzard employee might do: make stuff.

I would have imagined them to be around 300-400 people total, but that number is way, way bigger.

Now I'd love to see how many employees EA and Valve have.

Hmm, EA runs several MMOs, though none nearly as big as WOW. They do have way more game development studios and online services, I'd be a bit shocked if they didn't easily crack 10,000.
I was shocked that Zynga has about 3000 employees.

I bet they spend all their work hours on Facebook.
EA: Employees 7,820 (September 2011)
Valve: Employees ~260 (2011)
Ubisoft: Employees 6,700
Square Enix: Employees 3,338 (as of March 31, 2010

Odds yet another company has outsourced its customer support section??

spinefarm: EA: Employees 7,820 (September 2011)
Is that including fully consolidated subsidiaries? I doubt it.

Nope, they were actually never outsourcing their customer support department. CS for NA is located in their HQs, and CS for Europe is in their offices in Ireland (dunno about the other regions).

I wonder what the implication for shaving off 600 employees is though?
Their ingame support was already stretched.

Well, they introduced a few system for automatic recovery of hacked accounts, at least that's publicly known. Must have done something internally to improve their system quite a bit to be able to lay off 600 workers (90% from CS).

Siemens employ what, 400000 people across the world?
