There are no Steam achievements according to Witcher 2's Steam page. Ohh, and there is no Steam Cloud support.

haha lol then i would prefer the gog version any day, steam version also has the securom from what i read

Watch the 13. minutes. Also it will have only Steam DRM I think because they removed 3rd party DRM section on the Steam Store page.

Remember when games didn't have achievements and we just played them to enjoy the story and have fun?

Steam is of course not as customer friendly as GOG (30+ million users are not that easy to manage) but no. It doesn't have SecuRom and neither does it have DRM (Price is the same). The only difference between Steam version and GOG version is that the Pre-load feature is only available here. But I can't play till next weekend anyway so I don't really care much for it. We get one of the best games ever made, that's what matters!

However I would love to actually read details about the current distinctions of versions. I wasn't able to find them anywhere... I mean they did promise cloud support and achievements. Were there some technical issues?

mr saturn is on steam attack mode :D boing but trying to find out more details, usually the full game features are listed after the game unlocks

And here it has GOG DRM. We are talking about other DRM, like Atari or the security software DRM. Those are the ones that increase the price. That's why I only bought games on Steam. They are overall cheaper than anywhere else. Now that I have discovered GOG though I will start buying stuff here. I hope they can expand enough to add modern games here, I will surely buy them then. But the main point is that there are no third party DRM neither on Steam nor here. Thats why I hope GOG will become extensively popular soon.

TheJoe: You get a serial key with The Witcher for the optional activation. Chances are that serial key will work on Steam.

Delixe: Nah, key's only work on Steam if the games use Steamworks. The GOG version doesn't.
Not true. Prey and Sam and Max Season 3 aren't Steamworks.

Steamworks is an extension of the Steam API to certain licensed games. Some games can be activated through deals between publishers and Valve.

Since my first memories go back to games that really were just basic repeats of the exact same thing but just for higher highscores... I think those memories go back far longer than any 'story' based games xD

Pacman or Space invaders anyone? :)

Protoss: The big issue here is, I am restricted to buying the GOG version because I am in Europe and every other version is a ripoff! For example, the Steam version is essentially a third (!) more expensive (on GOG while paying the same price one gets a store credit about the difference, or maybe a 5.99 and a 9.99 game to choose).
Yeah, everything is a ripoff in Germany except beans, couscous and the GOG version of The Witcher 2. :)
