Hrm - let me get this straight.
The OP would like to get a Steam key by purchasing the DRM free GoG version? So, in essence, getting 2 games for the price of one. One of which he/she/it/them/other can distribute willy nilly to anyone due to the lack of DRM protection [not saying the OP would do that, just hypothetical].
Want steam achievements? Get steam version. Want DRM Free? Get GoG Version. Want Both? Buy Both.
While I am sorry that the way Steam treats foreign customers [especially in relation to the Euro/AUD] - I don't see any valid reason for this to happen.
Yes, I am chiming in late to the choir. Sorry - been busy.

Protoss: Well, for Steam it will end in buying the game at a sale when it is for like 5 Euro in two or three years. :-)
You can also just lie about your location in your info and buy it for the same price the rest of the world gets to. That way you're not forced to buy 2 full priced game with the money you would have saved if they'd put it up for the fair price. On Steam you could pay a US person to gift it to you if you know someone you can trust if you prefer the TF2 items and Steam Achievements.

OneFiercePuppy: You worry about save files?
It keeps you up at night, the thought that there might be files on your hard drive that you don't need? Or that some data demon could come along and cackle maniacally as it erases that save game of yours?
I don't really understand the obsession with the cloud. Maybe I'm just too old and grouchy. Or maybe I just have an extra hard drive ^_^
Kurina: I don't understand it either. I have all my saves on my PC as well as a backup drive, and it has suited me fine. Additionally, I am confused why people continue to support Steam and cloud saves, when a Dropbox account can essentially do the same thing. Not to mention, the latter gives you greater control over those saves than Steam, who doesn't let you view the files at all. If it was that easy to circumvent regional prices, don't you think that the infamous 1$=1€ thread on Steam forums would not existed, do you? Practically Steam told me to buy only discounted games. So be it.

liquidsnakehpks: in short the simplicity and the time saved,i never knew its real use either but stumbled on it by chance, a few months ago i had played hl2 like about 60% of the game and had left it for a while, when i restarted the game on my laptop, i was not interested cause i did not want to play from the start, there steam cloud kicked in for the first time it even had the quicksave & settings i had saved, steam fanboy or not -cloud save
