tinyE: What I don't get about the Winter Solstice being the beginning is that the Solstice is actually the turn around, the shortest day of the year, after which the sun stays out longer and I've always kind of seen that as a final stretch, not a starting block.
Yeah, this is exactly how I see it. The Solstice is Midwinter, because the worst is over and the days start getting longer and warmer again...

adaliabooks: No idea, at least someone shares my view :)

Seems to just be a cultural / location thing, depends where you are or where you're from presumably.

darthspudius: Saying that I don't see winter up in the North East any more. I can't remember the last time we had a cold, white winter. Might as well make it an extended Autumn at this rate.
We're in the North West, and while it's been a few years we did have some really cold white winters not that long ago (maybe 3 or 4 years ago?). You maybe don't get it quite as bad, as I imagine the worst storms come from the Atlantic so they've probably broken and mellowed a bit before they get to you.

We used to get it every year without fail but since my kids have been born (9yrs) we have barely had any major snow like we use to. Such a shame, I loved the chaos in such beautiful white fluff.

Yeah, when I was a kid it pretty much used to snow every winter (this was in Ireland). Now it's rare (and causes absolute havoc, how can snow cause such disruption whenever we get it?)

Anyway, I think that question may have derailed the OPs thread a little... :)

I love seeing everyone panic over a little snow. It has become such a rarity that people don't know what to do. It is hilarious.

What was the topic about again? :D

At least you are heated by the gulf stream and as such have some reason for the absence of snow. We, on the other hand, should be at least knee-deep in the white thing by now (but are we? nope), and our railway companies are still so surprised at the concept of snow that a mere handful of snowflakes grinds the trains to a halt.
