My friends at the WC CIC have released Wing Commander 1 for free. Details are at this page. (Details you probably won't like.)
And a happy 12th birthday to the CIC. Best game series community I've been a part of.

Checked the link but didn't see any details. Is this warez? :(
EA releasing Wing Commander for free seems out of character, especially after the Ultima 4 debacle.

It seems to have been done on the same license they generally use with magazines including all the same limitations
I really miss that series. WC1, 2, 3, 4 and especially Privateer.
I really liked playing that series. The only thing that bothered me about them was the only difficulty to it was that the game just sent tons of fighters at you, rather than a smaller number of ships that were harder to kill.
By the end, when you were supposed to be winning, the Kilrathi were still able to send gobs of ships. I think by the end of the first game, both me and that other hotshot(forgot his name) must've killed enought fighters to have depleted the whole Kilrathi fleet.

Not warez; it's completely legal. The details I was referring to was the fact it's not "freeware," per se.

It's the copy from the July 2000 PCGamer disk (I was looking through my old disks a bit ago so I knew exactly where it was). That disk contains "12 COMPLETE GAMES Plus ... the Daikatana demo!"
X-Com: UFO Defense
King's Quest
Alone in the Dark
The Secret of Monkey Island
Duke Nukem II
Links: The Challenge of Golf
Descent
Terminal Velocity
Wing Commander
Ultima I: The First Age of Darkness
Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss
Road & Track Presents: The Need for Speed
Plus the EXCLUSIVE Daikatana demo! "Experience John Romero's opus on four maps in single-player or co-op mode. See for yourself what the buzz is about."
Thats a fairly impressive magazine disc.
Oh sweet! I still have the sleeve for this disk in my collection. Sadly I lost the disk. I think I am officially legit in downloading Wing Commander 1. Though, I would still gladly pay for it again.

The limitation listed on the WC CIC site is only that you can't redistribute it. So anybody can download it and add on the Secret Missions.
I can't remember if I ever played the Secret Missions. I know I haven't played WC1 since around when it came out. I remember getting WC1 at the huge computer swap meet in L.A. (which probably still exists). That was the time of the big thick Computer Shopper magazine when real men (and women) choose and installed their own BIOS. Kids today.....

Secret Missions 1 & 2 contain some of the hardest levels ever in video games.
Can anyone know how to incorporate music from this edition to original DOS release or, alternatively - how to play WC1 Kilrathi Saga in DosBox? The point is to enjoy excellent music from Kilrathi Saga Edition AND use DosBox VGA scalers.
I loved WC 1. Played it a long time ago with 4 discs and a joystick. However I remember that I liked WC2 even more.

Can't do either of those things, unfortunately.
