So rumours are bumping around the tech sites that a new version of windows will be released as soon as next year. Changes include... well not much mostly updates and a merging of WRT with Windows phone to create a single app environment...

The big part of the rumours is it might be FREE... The reason for this is to kickstart a move to a yearly release cycle with a cost of ~$20 much like Apple already does.

So thoughts? Opinions? is it bullcrap?

Well, as that sounds just a feature update for Win8, it sounds like MS didn't have time to finsih up all the things they wanted to bring to the table with W8. That happens and I think it's a smart move to release the stuff later on, as they really had to push W8 out.

I actually like this part.

Why not call it Windows Bluescreen? That has a more familiar ring. ;)

Windows Blue? Maybe it means that Microsoft has got the Blues? Or maybe it means the Blues for advanced PC users on Windows. The next Windows startup sound will not be made by Brian Eno but by Tom Waits? Maybe :-) Maybe they decided for a back to the roots thing. Windows 95, Windows ME style to catch the more nostalgically inclined of their user-base.

Ballmer should do that sales pitch for every new Windows OS that comes out just like he did for Windows 1.0

Releasing next year? I used to remember seeing Windows Blue at least once every other day. That particular color will forever be etched into my memo...

Releasing a major feature pack makes a lot of sense. I can't see it having a cost attached though; Windows Phone's upgrades were free, and Windows 8/RT encompass the tablet market where iOS and Android upgrades are also free.Enterprise customers are unaffected by any future products. Microsoft's software assurance subscription provides ongoing support for previous Windows versions (Windows 3.1 is still available through this channel) and free upgrades to any future versions. They can upgrade when they want, how they want.
