I had heard that 8 would disallow the use of 3rd party distribution software, but I thought it was a rumor. My dad bought a laptop and I guess he didn't have a choice in whether it would have windows 8 or not.

The GOG downloader works perfectly fine for me, same with Steam and Origin. Windows 8 hasn't hindered these in any way. More than likely you haven't got something configured right.

It works fine it's just you. No seriously check your comp it's not win8 itself.
Are you sure you haven't got the beta opt-in turned on and trying to use the normal version?

I don't have Win8 and it used to scare me then I remembered when 7 came out and it seemed that EVERYONE was convinced that NOTHING worked on it. It was worse than the Y2K scare, and almost as silly.

It might be true that Windows 8 on x86 allows desktop programs to run but we can all see the future with the Metro store and Windows 8 on ARM. That is only approved software through Microsoft's store.

BULL SHIT! pure and simple no freaking government in the world would let MS do that! People who talk crap like that are FUDing it up just because they can. Look at the people spreading it.. we have the RMS a guy so OSS biased he insists on it being called GNU/whatever, who everytime something that is released turns round and calls it rubbish because it's not OSS and we have.. hmm yeah I'm stuck people with half a brain know MS can't do it!
