Question. Some people i talked with said there is only the Upgrade version right now. Where is the retail or full OEM versions? (i do plan to play with it as a VM or the like on another machine - it will never be on primary while Win7 exists)

Amazon Germany has an OEM version for sale. But apart from that there seems to be only upgrades.

I just learned the media centre component is being offered as a free upgrade until January:

Wait, they are selling the pro pack for 70$ but Windows 8 Pro upgrade for 40$? What am I missing ...

I thought the Pro Pack was the Pro upgrade. I can't make head or tale of these releases.

Windows Pro Upgrade edition is $40 and for moving from any version before 8 to Win8 Pro
Windows 8 Pro Pack is for moving windows 8 standard to windows 8 Pro and for some odd reason wasn't reduced (most likely because all windows 8 machines I can find right now have win 8 pro on them)

it's a key to add windows media centre and a bunch of codecs to windows, it's handy if you have an xbox and want to stream stuff from your pc to it
