Fenixp: You do realize it's a Java application, right? As in, running in VM? And... Heh, yes, I'm sure MS turned into a charity organization and this is in no way whatsoever related to increasing Win8 popularity.
It can still be certified. This is actually similar to the Windows 7 Logo and Windows Vista Logo programs that have been running for a long time now, just with a different name since the 'logo' word doesn't exactly speak about certification.
I've been browsing the app store and so far the only one I've used daily is the Newegg app (online retailer of electronic goods for those of you outside North America).

I'm eyeing up some of the free games on offer, but there's so many of them my head's spinning. Are there any top free game apps that in general a gamer shouldn't be without?

Please quote me so I see your response, and ty in advance :)

Adera is a point and click / hidden object adventure game. It is free now, but the other episodes are still under development. No idea whether they will be free too, or whether will come as DLCs.

Minesweeper is also free, but some people report seeing ads in it. I've not seen one yet... though ads in a game that was always free with Windows is kind of stupid, since they already have the background code.

PinballX2 if you're a pinball fan. Game is free, two tables are free, but the rest come as DLCs.

I had my eye on Adera and Pinball X2, thanks for the recommendations.
Mhe, wont be getting windows 8.
Im really happy with windows 7 and probably use that untill windows 9 comes.
Purchased my Windows 8 upgrade today.

The only reason I chose to upgrade was I wanted the Bitlocker functionality.
Not going to move to windows 8 happy with windows 7

Bitlocker is amazing, the only way to crack it on a USB is to sift out the key in memory if its still loaded, once ejected its brute force only. Great security there :)
Anyone else having problems running Ultima 7 on Windows 8? In my system it doesn't even launch. I get the Dosbox screen and then it jumps back to the desktop.
Ive been noticing some of my (tried and true) dosbox configs just wont work on 8.

Maybe unrelated, but still interesting timing. In the local news it was rumored to be partly because Steve Balmer was not happy with the lackluster(?) sales of MS Surface.

Ok. Is there some article stating this, as all the news sites seem surprised by this news?

His email is floating out there where he mentions it's been planned for awhile. And one of the win8 launches he said he had planned to leave but decided to stay to make win8 the best it could be... take from it what you will.
Great

Microsoft touts DirectX 11.1 as a piece of Windows 8, likening its exclusivity to Windows 8 (and Windows RT and Windows Server 2012) to how DirectX 11 was built specifically for Windows 7. However, if you were a Vista user, you may remember DirectX 11 being retrofitted for Vista, whereas Microsoft has made it clear that — at the moment, at least — DirectX 11.1 will be exclusive to Windows 8 without any plans to bring it to older operating systems.

Im tempted to switch platform/Os now
i dont want to buy a new os evry time they make one and they earn more than enough money.
Just need more support for other os.
Games for linux is a bit lacklusting when it comes to be able to run them and i dont have a mac.
