None of my GL games worked correctly on my Radeon 4770 during the Win8 Consumer Preview. Catalyst was unavailable for my card and I had to make due with the basic bundled driver.

Duh, that made the trick. I always install my games on C:/Juegos, but for some reason U7 ended up in Program Files (x86), so that's what I tried first. Nox was installed in the right folder, and I guess that's why it was working correctly.

I feel so dumb. I am sorry I made you waste your time like that. :(

AMD released a Windows 8 driver package for HD 2000/3000/4000. It supports both desktop and mobile GPUs. I'm using it with my HD3850 and everything seems to work as intended--including OpenGL games. You should definitely try this version. :)

Well, I just hit a snag with Lords of the Realm. Made it through Quantsville and well into Rose. The screen went dark and the game froze went I clicked on end turn. I restarted the game three times with the same thing happening. The game does say you need 256 color. I dont think windows 8 does 256 color. Can't find it in the controll panel at any rate. That could be the reason for the freeze.

Is anyone else having problems with GTA3 (Steam) in Windows 8? Namely, the menus are barely visible, and become completely invisible when you try to navigate in them.

See the attached picture, on the left how it looks on Win7 on the very same machine, running on the same GeForce driver version 310.70 (newest) as the Win8 version on the right.

Also, on Win8 I seem to be unable to change the ingame resolution/bitdepth, it seems to be locked to 640x480 16bpp. By default it is the same also on Win7, but it can be changed there without problems. Any cure for that?

Any ideas? Oh yeah, I accidentally found an odd workaround for the invisible menus: if you repeatedly press the Print Screen key on the keyboard, the menus become more and more visible with each press. Odd, but at least you can then see the menu items once again.

If you get to the game, it seems to run ok, except being locked to 640x480 resolution. Also, once you are able to start the actual game and go the menus from there, they seem fine.

EDIT: I don't know whether it mattered, but from the NVidia Control Panel, I forced vsync on (by default it is for application to decide) and triple buffering on, and now I can change the game resolution and bitdepth too.

The "invisible menus" bug still persists, but since I found the PrintScreen key workaround, I guess I can live with it. Odd bug.

I'm sorry to necro this thread, but I didn't think it was necessary to start a new one for my observation today.

So I finally made an attempt at giving Win 8's Metro (I know that's not its name anymore, but it's pretty much gotten stuck that way in my mind) a proper try at a nearby Best Buy and my god! It's even more dreadful than I imagined. Yes, I can see this working okay on a tablet - they actually had some Win 8 tablet demo units to try out with those funky (and quite odd) attachable keyboards - but on anything else it's just awful. Just to think how awkward this was with mouse alone... then I tried it on a laptop's trackpad. Ugh! Whoever thought this was a good (or hell! even passable) design choice for normal PCs really needs to be taken out back and shot. It's about as unintuitive as PC software can get, not to mention the way certain options are available is only through using hot corners that take forever to actually do something. Hell, I still couldn't figure out how to access open 'tabs' in the new IE (or accessing its url/toolbar without restarting the program) after several minutes of messing around with the damn thing, and I've been using computers and assorted devices for well over two decades!

I'll be damned sure to get something like Stardock's Start8 if I happen to get stuck with Win 8 eventually because as it is this new start menu THING is just painful.

What I fucking hate is that to do certain stuff you have to switch back to desktop mode, then go back to metro mode. :-( Are they trying to piss people off?

Like trying to change an IE setting under metro.. nope, gotta use desktop IE. Grrr...

I actually like Windows 8. I was sceptical in the beginning, but after I tried it on my moms new laptop I decided to get the pro license when it was on sale. Switching between metro (or new UI or what ever Microsoft wants to call it) and desktop is something that works a lot better than I initially thought and start menu is somehting I really don't miss at all.

There are oddities in it, like the location of the power button and such, but over all transition from Windows 7 to Windows 8 was pretty smooth. Plus my PC hasn't booted this fast ever before.

Yeah, most of those "fixes" are not fixing what I do not like about the OS, but he was running the demo from a surface tablet. The only feature he showed that was an improvement (IMO) is the smaller tile size on the start screen and perhaps the renaming of the groups. I don't care about editing photos with windows basic image editor, and the search is getting to Bing-ified for my likes.

It is a free upgrade.

The All Apps thing that he showed was just a faster way to access that. Instead of swiping and tapping, now you just swipe. But everything seems more organised compared to today where everything gets put in one list.

Also new, Office 2013 will be coming to Windows 8 tablets (this depends on the tablet) for free, and Outlook 2013 will be coming to Windows RT 8.1 for free too.
