Past experiences with Service Packs on XP don't make that eager to install this one. As such, I'm going to wait until a program/game I'm installing requires it.

Yeah ran it through memtest86 for a while and after it passed with all 8gb, I got rid of Windows. Been using Linux exclusively for the last month and a half and I haven't had any problems.
On Windows I was getting like 2 BSODs per day for about 3 or 4 days before I nuked it.

It must have been a driver issue. Installing proper updates for your devices helps. :p ;)

In all honesty, most of the compatibility problems with prior patches that needed fixing were for Windows Server 2k8R2 and not Windows 7.

Now, as this doesn't bring anything truly new that hasn't been already available in Windows Update I'm not going to go the route of "update your OS you fucking twat or don't complain that your machine gets infected after" but instead say that so far there haven't been major problems.

I've installed it as soon as it hit WU and was done in around 30 minutes; download size was around 90MB (was already up to date with patches) and total install size was around 500MB.

I'll just wait and see a bit more as well (where the update is concerned) , given that the update is issued with ~80ish MB for me, I should be rather up to date with most security issues.

Well, if I compare with XP, I would expect SP1 to consolidate many little fixes and thus an easy way to update your setup, SP2 to introduce some change to the OS ( with SP2 becoming a requirement for some software shortly after that ) and SP3 to screw your OS in a way that makes you eager to buy the next version of Window$...

Updating caused it to BSOD on me-twice. Finally got it all updated and seems to be working, but frankly it worried me that it was going to mess up my build completely.

Hmm, I think I'm going to hold off on updating for a little while even though I do currently have a W7 problem that I hope this will fix.

Microsoft seems to be aware, that a lot of people don't want the update and they provided a tool to block the installation of the Service Pack for 1 year.

While this is a somewhat customer friendly move, it is indeed strange from a software security and stability point of view. Given the intention of the updates this is somewhat contradicting.

What about for people who re-format? This combines all the updates into one nice little package. Same for people who just bought an oem or retail license and sp1 retail packs haven't shipped out yet.

I wouldn't count on it. It's basically adding new remote desktop fuctionality.
