Roberttitus: ^ Well navagon said I shouldn't.....

Navagon: I'm not necessarily saying you shouldn't. What I'm saying is that the page KavazovAngel linked to listed many end user problems caused directly by installing SP1. My copy is working fine so I really, really don't need to be taking any chances with it.

I'm going to turn off updates, leave it a few months and let them patch out the kinks first.
You do realize you can roll back right? The only problem I see right now is that the damn thing is barely downloading. Maybe the servers are taxed by eager sp1 upgraders.

Meh, we've been here before. Precedent dictates that playing the waiting game is the wisest choice in the end. I'm not up for wasting time with something so needless.

I agree with you on this one, I usually wait a few weeks before SP upgrades, there is ALWAYS broken shit right when they come out.

It's never been wise to install a major Windows update right off the bat and this is looking like it's not about to be an exception. I don't understand why people can't wait for this one. It's not like this is Vista after all. Windows 7 works just fine as it is.

That's what people said about Windows 7 in general. I had it installed less than a month after launch and had no issues. It's essentially all the updates rolled into one and a few updates that you don't even use. What bugs could there be to affect you? How do you know that most of the problems arent from people using fake copies? Most of the time it is.

Delixe: If Navagon told you to jump off a cliff.... actually never mind.
I'd ask "which cliff?"

What Navagon said.^^

Why fixing what isn't broken (even with a roll back posibility (that is likely to screw up something else)).
As long as there isn't a serious issue or current security risk that it fixes and considering Microsoft's history of introducing new holes - I'll wait and look how long the list of complains becomes.
I have taken the logical assertion that Windows 7 works just fine one step further, and installed the Service Pack anyway. After all, it's a Windows 7 Service Pack so it should work just fine. :)

Like I said: precedent. There's nothing at all surprising about people having problems with a brand new service pack any more than there is about people bitching about how their pirated software doesn't work as well as it would if they'd paid for it.

As for the fact that it's mostly hotfixes that have already been released - I noticed that, but it only reinforces my disinterest in installing it now.

Running sp1. Aside from my computer screwing around after a big update, it's just like before. It didn't turn into a trial version . Service packs are also famous for one other thing - clearing out the vast majority of useless old restore points. I just reclaimed 62 GB of space!

I wonder if they fixed the random BSODs I was getting after upgrading to 8gb of RAM? Probably not. Not going to reinstall Lamedows to find out either.

Is your RAM 100% functional?

By the way, the SP was only 93MBs for me through Windows Update.

It all depends on how up to date your machine is. If you installed all the previous updates, sp1 was pretty small. The size ranges from 89 - 905 MB. Obviously if you renistall Windows, sp1 will be a 905 MB download to install all the previous updates.

Yeah, that sounds like a hardware problem. I'd test it with one stick at a time to see if there are any problems there.
I have to download every update I'm made aware of.. I even have to get updates to software i don't have.. I'm ADDICTED to updates. Completely breaks my ProTools rig every time a new version of OSx comes out. I never learn! The temptation is too strong.. The promise of great new features and hotfixes.. Just tasting the word HOTFIX has be balls in an uproar!

Shiiit.. I have to get my PC and download this badboy right away.. And while I'm at it i should drop by download.cnet.com and see if there are any other updates lurking about..

TO THE BATMOBILE!

Leifern: [Updates!]
Yeah cause what else do you need hard drive space for...

OsX updates are a bitch because they often sneak in firmware updates with all the other goodies and you can find your combo drive suddenly refusing to burn DVDs because apple decided it was time to update your firmware on the sly. Fuckers.
