stonebro: What kind of shitty low-grade college / university does not offer free Windows these days? Back in my uni days I had 10 valid Windows XP keys, all free, legit and university provided. XP Professional, not Home Shitstainum.

Windows 7 Home Premium is far, far better than previous Home versions. I'd never run XP without Professional but I'm grabbing 7 Home with no regrets.

Not sure what you mean. There were only like 2 differences between XP Home and XP Pro. One being Remote Desktop (I think), the other being file encryption.
Urgh. I'm eligible, but I can't seem to receive the email confirmation for the link, despite doing using their tips. Might have to call the IT dept at my college tomorrow.
NOTE: This is an upgrade version from Vista only. Looks like it's going to be a full format for me despite having a fresh XP install.
NOTE 2: This also is a pre-order only from the looks of it. When I go to checkout, it says that it will be a disc copy mailed to my location, NOT a download only. Considering the fact that the OS has already been released through MSDNAA for people to download immediately, I'm not sure I'm going to bother with it since I still can't get it until release day.

Aliasalpha: Is this properly owning it or one of those lame one time install jobs like that offer where you get it free (with some subscription or other)?

Navagon: I'd imagine that it's simply an academic version. Which is only valid for as long as you're a student.

No they're valid after that..... I got Office on a deal like this.
Yeah same here, I was hoping this might have an Australian analogue but evidently not yet.
Edit: Broken quote, too lazy to fix

Okay then, it seems MS are actually trying to offer students a better deal. Who'd have thought?
Since its not actually out yet I hope that its actual release will be the trigger for an australian deal. Better happen this year while I'm still a student
You can also get Win7 Professional for US$30 as well.
I only pre-ordered Home Premium because someone else paid me. My university is part of MSDNAA, but there's some stuff that needs to be sorted out before I can get access.
And, besides, a one-year IEEE membership or something like that for US$20 gets any college student MSDNAA access, which means many, MANY free, legit Microsoft software licenses!
You guys know Adobe does this too for students, right? I have to pick up Flash one of these days to work on one of my pet projects. Last I checked, the CS4 bundle was 1/4 of the price of retail with the student rate (349.99USD instead of 1699.99USD).
