I agree with Fenixp that PoE is the best hack&slash game out there right now. It has lots of very interesting ideas, and imo any fan of the genre should give it a try.

Personally, I didn't like the idea of it being online only at first, but considering that much of the devs' efforts are concentrated on multiplayer tournaments, it makes sense.
It's also easier to sell cosmetic stuff when people can show it off to other players I suppose.
I've lost interest for hack'n'slash over the years but even I can commend the execution of Path of Exile. The only thing that bothered me (aside from not enjoying its genre anymore) was the unnecessary amount of passive skills.

Fenixp: It's your choice. I still disagree with you on the points you have made, especially from purely execution standpoint - you seem to not be aware of difficulties even Diablo 2 had to face, and how expensive are they to remedy client-side. I don't want to further derail the thread, so there you have it.
Cool, you're still online. All the MP and logging on stuff aside, does it have a 'traditional' MP mode. I realize I have to be online yadda yadda yadda but will I always be sharing the field with other players? I don't mind that per say and DIablo 2 does a nice job but sometimes I like being alone and having all the monsters/treasures at my personal disposal.

Oh and I'm guessing the bandwidth drain while playing is minimal; it's not like constantly downloading a movie or something. :P

The whole game except for towns is instanced. So you'll never share zones with enemies with other players unless you're grouped with them.

As I said earlier, only towns are shared - and you can't really do anything in tows aside from talking to NPCs, which you don't really see others doing (you just see them stand next to each other.) All zones with monsters present are generated for your character and your character only - the only limitation here is that if your character leaves for at least 20 minutes, the zone will disappear when you leave and re-generate when you enter it. You can get around that by clearing your immediate surroundings and leave your character just ... Stand there if you need to leave and don't want to abandon the generated area. And that's it. If you want to play alone, 99% of the time, you will be alone.

I'll try to keep the remaining stupid questions to a minimum. I saw I can download it through Amazon but is there a better place. Also something that size is going to take a while and I'm bound to lose my connection once or twice while downloading; will it save my download progress?

Can't you just download it through Steam? It requires Steam to work after all, so that's the easiest way. And it does save download progress in that case.

And thus why isn't this game available for purchase to play not on their servers again?
here goes nothing. :P

Because vast majority of the game runs on their servers - not just streaming quest data and world, also battle calculations and stuff like that. Given focus of the game, I think that was the right call to prevent cheating and hacks - and creating (and more importantly maintaining) the same functionality server-side and client-side would get very expensive, thus their focus. As I said tho, I am not willing to discuss whether or not it actually was the right call, it's just what I think.

Far out, Amazon said it was a 6+ GB download and the PoE site says it's only 4.5.

Oh and since I'm here. I tend to get bored with characters really fast so I can restart whenever I want, right?

Yes you can, although classes aren't nearly as different from each other as in say diablo 2.

Elmofongo: In the end is it any better than Torchlight 1 or all 3 Diablos?
avatar
tinyE: NOTHING is better than Diablo 2....NOTHING!!!!!!!!
Agree 100%. D2 is the absolute tops for Action RPGs. Torchlight 2 was far better than Torchlight 1, though, but nowhere near as good as D2.

Fenixp: I understood that, that's why I spent time explaining that it's not DRM. Path of Exile is an online game. It's built around being an online game
Is that you EA? Seriously, just replace Path of Exile with SimCity.

On topic. I was willing to pay $20 for this game after playing the open beta way back when. At this point, I'm willing to pay about $4. I doubt it'd even get that low on GOG so I don't care one way or the other. Only own the first because GOG gave it away for free. Second one is much better.

Looking forward to Grim Dawn. Don't want to play too much of it before it is complete, but based on what I played it's pretty fun.

grinninglich: By the i highly recommend Titan Quest + Immortal Throne expansion + Fan Made Patch. Very good game and has a different setting.(Ancient Greece, Egypt, China etc..)
Titan Quest is one of the best of the genre as well. I loved the setting. Wish it was on GOG, because I'm not gonna purchase a Steam version.

I will not be playing Path of Exile, because it is online only, so there really isn't a point to me.
