I install a few of them and give them a try and if one of them really gets me hooked, I try to stick to it and forget the others for now.
Also, sometimes I have to realize there's a difference between the games I enjoy and the games I would love to enjoy or think I should enjoy. That's what I thought of when you mentioned series and that you always want to play the first part before the second and so one. Do you really want to play all parts in a row in those cases or do you just think you need to, in order to appreciate the series? I know that thought, but it's kind of silly if you don't really enjoy part 1 and only play it because you'd love to play part 3, for example.
In the end it might keep you from playing the part you're really keen on, if you get burnt out on the less enjoyable parts leading to it. And who knows, maybe playing the more attractive parts first will make you more lenient towards the flaws of the predecessors, because then you can look at them through the tinted goggles of a fanboy. ;)
