George Orwell is spinning in his grave. And somewhere, right this instant, you're giving George Lucas a boner.
I threw out the original boxes for Fallout 1 and 2. I still keep manuals and everything else tho, but the boxes just take up space.

StingingVelvet: You could have sold that stuff for good money. There are several ebay sellers who cater to the collector's market and they buy anything related to old PC games and rebuild the complete sets.
I have never used eBay, and I'm not about to start now. Besides the vast majority of them were bargain bin games, so either discount re-releases of known games or just plain unknown games to begin with. Like I said, the boxes that were worth keeping, I kept. There weren't many of those.

Nope, not a regret. I still own the original CD's, that is what counts IMO.

You're not a collector obviously, but a lot of people are. A complete Fallout in the original box goes for like $100.
Only game boxes I've kept were FEAR, NWN2 and OFP, all because they came without proper cases so I still need somewhere to keep the discs

A box is just a container to keep filthy store customer's fingers off your nice shiny stuff, as soon as you get your shiny stuff out, the box is as useless as an empty chip packet only without the flavor so there's not much point turning it inside out and licking it
I guess it makes sense to read a lot of anti-collection comments on a digital download store's forum, but it still makes me sad.

I'm a true collector, I love seeing all my boxes lined up on the shelf and I like flipping through old game boxes and seeing what they packaged in and how they tried to sell the game. Pulling out stuff like Deus Ex's fake newspaper or reading the stuff on the back of the Fallout box about it being your survival kit... that stuff just makes me so happy.
I definitely see the hypothetical reason for it and for a long time I used to keep all of my boxes but then I came to the realisation that space was finite and the stoage I was using was woefully inefficient. A friend of mine came to the same realisation and started keeping them folded but eventually ran out of space doing that too

StingingVelvet: Daggerfall goes for like $80 complete and someone just tosses the box away? Not cool
For people who just want to play the game, Daggerfall is free, you just have to get it directly from Bethesda on their Elder Scrolls site. But sure, It's just a digital download, no box and no printed manual.

As for throwing away boxes. I know a bunch of true games collectors and even though I'm not one I can understand why they would be upset. With that being said, people selling an old game $80 are not collectors, they just speculate on old games and wait for the price to be high enough for them before selling. It's a different philosophy, so to speak. True collectors would never sell their games unless they have no other choice (big financial setback for example). You don't become a collector to resale things at higher prices and make a profit. You become a collector because you love the things you collect.

And you cease to be a collector when your wife / girlfriend starts to threaten you to get rid of these childish antics or else. Most then transform into serial killers, but those that don't get real familiar with ebay.

My only point was that selling it means it remains in circulation, so collectors can get a hold of the item at some point. Throwing it away means no one gets it.

If your wife/girlfriend mocks your interests and tries to force you to get rid of them she isn't a very good wife/girlfriend if you ask me.

Haha thanks for the lol XD

Surprised Nick Cage didn't become one after Priscilla Presley forced him to sell his entire comic book collection - I heard one of the comics was a mint edition of Superman #1. Unbelievable.

This is pretty much how I am as well. I am not one to hold onto objects for any length of time, but video games seem to be the exception. I take a bit of joy in seeing them lined up along the shelf, remembering the fun times I have had with many of them. Even if I do not play them regularly, just seeing them can still bring a smile at times. Additionally, as you mentioned, it is fun to look back at all the packaging and contents, seeing the creative effort put behind a lot of the materials.

I am only saddened by the fact that as a kid, I did not have the foresight to hold onto some of the games and materials that came with old DOS games. The manuals the size of textbooks, crazy extras, etc. I miss that stuff.
