DOSBox works perfectly on the Mac platform. Just wondering why Mac binaries aren't provided for DOSBox based releases.

I think they don't feel that the increased effort (making two packages for all their DOSBox based games) would be offset by the increased market coverage.

Mainly: The number of Mac users being smaller than the number of Windows users, the number of Mac users that are gamers being smaller still and the number of Mac gamers interested in old games being relatively tiny. Also most Mac gamers are used to the idea of using bootcamp or VM software.

Mac is a minority for one thing. There's an emulation for Mac that you can use that will treat itself like a Microsoft based OS, you may be able to run the games through that. Failing that, there's probably a way to re-mount the games to the Mac version of Dosbox. I wouldn't know though.

Out of curiosity, have you tried the games as is?

Based on my experiences with doing this in Linux, it should be relatively simple.

1. Use a Windows (virtual) machine or Wine to install a GoG DOS title
2. Copy the installed files to your directory of choice. If low on disk space, you can delete the Windows DOSBox binaries
3. Point the Mac DOSBox app to the .conf file that came with the DOS title. It's usually titled something like 'dosboxGAMETITLE.conf'*.

* You may need to edit this file a little first. If you have problems running the game, check the [autoexec] section of the .conf file and ensure the file names are correct. The filenames here are often in the wrong case, since Windows is case insensitive. This will, however, cause problems in OS X and Linux.

I doubt it, more likely the increased cost in supporting mac customers. Actually producing the install package wouldn't amount to much. Just look how simple it is for mac users once that exe packaging is dealt with.

But having your support staffed trained and equipped with macs to handle queries?

One day this might prove attractive enough, I don't think the mac install base is small enough to brush off any longer and every lifetime mac user coming to this site sees brand new games for under $10. They aren't coming at the titles as jaded nostalgics.

Ha ha ha, games on Macs, hahahahahaha

No actually I think it may have something to do with licensing issues. Sometimes, the games released here were ported or sold by entirely different companies or subcompanies of the original publishers. Many of Interplay's games were sold by MacPlay, which hasn't existed for a while now. Other games were ported by Aspyr, which doesn't give a damn about older Macs nowadays. They've even removed support pages for all PPC-based games, the dicks.

Having to sort yet another platform, legally, would be too costly.
