As I said before most films/books/etc all follow the same basic plots. When you get beyond that and wanting everything to stick to the source material then things aren't as bad as they seem initially and you may even end up liking them...may being the term to use here.

Take...that....back......Zombieland was hialrious, as was Shaun of the Dead, and Night of the Living Dead is a bloody classic. I think the problem is less that stuff is bad and more that you appear to be too picky/critical.

Because those are mere words. When you remove the horror (which is at least partly based on surviving with limited supplies) aspect from, say, Resident Evil 1, you get something that closely resembles and would almost definitely be called an adventure game. And no, I don't write the definitions, but you don't either. There is no survival genre because so many games would fall under the category that it would be pretty redundant. Arguably a number of games (on older game systems or, these days, Flash) could be called survival games because they have, in essence, just a survival mode and nothing else. Resident Evil 4 does have a kind of survival mode in the shape of Mercenaries, but that doesn't make it a survival game any more than the presence of Tetra Master makes Final Fantasy IX a card game.

What I meant was that you can have horror without survival but not survival without horror, although now that I think about it, I can't recall any horror game that wouldn't fall under the survival horror category, so I did cock up a bit. I'm just going to say that as far as I can tell, you can't have one without the other. Genre definitions flux a bit over time, naturally, but right now I can't think of a game that's trying to be scary without placing the player in constant danger. That's not to say it doesn't exist, of course.

By survival genre I meant my own unofficial definition based on the fact that you try to survive being killed by zombies. Of course it's a broad one, with many games fitting into it and all......

Zombieland was mind numbingly idiotic and definitely not funny.
Shaun of the Dead is great. One of my favourite movies of all time actually. I'm willing to call this one an exception.
Have you actually watched Night of the Living Dead within the past decade? Sure it was scary and effective a long time ago but now that zombies have become such a common theme, it just really doesn't hold up very well. It's great in the context and what it eventually led to (or perhaps not due to the latter), but as a modern viewing experience, it does not rank very highly.

edit: oh and I'll add Dead Snow in the list of exceptions. That film is great!

NOTLD is a cult classic and to me a good film. I could care less if it's still scary or not to me personally, as to me(and many) it's still a good film regardless if the shock/scare factor is there or not anymore.

And Zombieland is funny......:P

She isnt in the games because her character was invented by her husband (writer and or director for the majority of the movies) paul anderson. He shoe horned his wife into the movies by making a character that the series revolved around since milia is married to anderson.

Of course after seeing the new trailer for 6 I wouldnt be surprised if she is in RE7 because the next logical step in that god awful series is having someone with super powers running around punching virus mutations into space while carrying a gun the size of a car and spouting out oneliners as she dispenses justice on umbrella experiments.

The first movie was decent and had some creepy moments and captured SOME of the tension surrounding a bunch of seemingly normal people, confronted with genetic experiments and walking dead.

Everything Paul Anderson did after, just plain sucked massive donkey balls. No other way around it, imo. If you're gonna watch a mindless zombie action movie, there's pleeeeenty of better choices out there.

RE: the game definitely has action in it and is pretty much an action game. However, the series itself has always revolved around what happens when normal people are placed into fantastic situations, with conspiracies and double crosses happening in the background. The movies, post 1, had none of the atmosphere, and quite frankly, I've never given a shit about Alice as a character, so therefore, her appearance in any of the games would be completely out of place.

To expand upon the point a little further, I wouldn't have cared if the movies had NONE of the characters from the games, as long as they capture the atmosphere of RE. I point as evidence to The Walking Dead. It's a great drama about survival horror in a grim situation and I think Paul Anderson missed a great opportunity by taking the Michael Bay path, assuming that movie watchers just want big explosions and mindless plot points. I also think that had he continued in the same vein as the first movie, with less emphasis on the action itself and spent more time creating characters people would actually care about, as well as the dramatic tension created by the trappings that you have endless possibilities with, in the RE universe. Hell, I even think Marilyn Manson did a great job with the creepy music in the first movie.

I suppose it's all a moot point now, but w/e's clever. Just not my cup o' tea.

First part is opinion and subjective.....so is second part. And c'mon many also liked them. Though they won't admit it sometimes because of fear of diehard RE fans mocking them I would wager.
I wouldn't mind if she made a cameo in a possible RE7. (In a cutscene or as an NPC in-game somewhere.) BTW what's so godawful about the RE series? You mean the new games? It seems a good number of oldschool RE fans didn't.....it seems to me that's due in part to nostalgia.

What is bad in new RE games? Well, they are kinda good if we are talking about action games. I enjoyed them, especially 5 because of co-op. But thing is that there is a lot of actions games like that now. Even makers of RE admit that they want to attract COD fans to their franchise. Look at new titles - shooter, shooter, shooter, action adventure, action adventure, shooter, shooter, rpg, shooter, shooter, rpg...

Don't you want play something different sometimes? There is so few survival horrors nowadays... I miss games like Resident Evil. Not because of nostalgia, but because it was something different.

Yeah, tbh, I thought Dead Island was kind of refreshing. Of course there's action elements, but it didn't completely revolve around it. It WAS kind of a lootfest/fetchfest, but I think more people should be willing to think outside of the box in regards to survival horror games. Not every single one needs to be a cookie-cutter mediocre pile of ADD crud, designed for CoD fans. They have their game, publishers need to realize that CoD fanboys are fanboys for a reason, and that most gamers aren't in the market for something LIKE CoD.

Because Milla Jovovich's husband doesn't direct the games. Yes, sometimes I think the RE movies could be retitled "Look How Fucking Hot My Wife Is".

Subtexts on sequels could be: "Drool, You'll Never Get Any Of This, Nerds!"

I like the newer games because I LIKE shooters and action games, even the cheesy ones. Of course I also like niche games and more traditional horror/etc games. I just don't see why people have to complain about a series changing tone when there are other games released by indie companies/etc which can fill your niche cravings quite nicely that one could switch to or play.

People need to focus less on "moaning"(being sad or frustrated) that their favorite series was "butchered" in their eyes and more that it isn't the end of the world & that there are other things to play in their favorite genres and in other genres to play just as well.

Name those survival horror games that fill niche. ;P
