People are extremely skeptical of the iPad, and for good reason; it's a glorified iPod Touch touted as the best tablet there is. Though it fails in being a computer, what I discovered when I got my hands on it inside the belly of the beast (my local Apple store) made me more interested in the thing than ever before.
I waited in lines and lines to try it out. The entire store was packed with people, looking down on the giant slates of light like they were window-gazing into a window of a shop, peering at all the wondrous presents that they wish they could have. When I finally laid my grubby mitts on the monstrosity, I went to the games at once, as any gamer would most likely do. Plants vs. Zombies was nice, I was confused by Zen Garden, and Flight Control was a bigger version of Flight Control (still an amazing game). But what really grabbed me was Real Racing HD. I jumped into a race and it put me in the cockpit view. I was surrounded by the view, and it was breathtaking. As I sped around corners and positioned myself in front of other racers, there was this level of immersion I had rarely felt before. It sounds silly when I'm describing it, but it was truly an awesome experience.
There are several cons to the device; it would make me look like a tool when I whip out this giant fucker and tilt it like a madman, I am absolutely afraid of what would happen if I dropped it, and the price point is murder. Nevertheless, those fleeting moments I spent in a cockpit like that were amazing, and I couldn't help but feel that if other game makers take as much advantage of the screen space as the makers of Real Racing HD do, it could really be an amazing thrill for all involved. I doubt I'll be getting one anytime soon, but it holds more wonder for me than the iPod Touch or iPhone ever did.
