So I'm about 2/3 of the way through (I would guess), this game is off the charts. This is a horror military shooter (don't know if that's a real thing, but it should be and this would be one). It does have regenerating health and the 2 weapon thing but honestly I think that's okay for this kind of shooter and the shooting is merely the grease the moves you along the rails through the story anyway.

I cannot recommend this highly enough, buy it now! This is the kind of game we want more of. The marketing really is shameful, because this shooter is very different.

Allright, I just started up the prologue and I just came in hear so say the game is screaming of awesome.

It starts with the menu, the graphics, the sound, the vibe and wow.

I already know where the story is going after the intro (A certain name is a dead giveaway), but that only made it more interesting to see how they put it up.

And at the end of the beginning credits it says

- Special Guest: SimonG -

Which look really cool.

I know, never judge a book by its cover, but that is the most promising start of a game I had in years!

I don't think it was all that big outside of Germany. Every PC gamer I know here knows it, but every PC gamer I know in the UK has never heard of it.

The bitch of it is that my disc version is only in German, so I can't really show them properly. I agree with Simon though, it is a truly awesome game, and now that I know it's by Yager Entertainment, I'll probably pick it up (for PS3 mind you, as I'm on a low-Steam diet).

Edit: Just checked, and apparently there was only an English-language version made for the Xbox. Every version of the game for PC is German-only..

HOLY JESUS FSCKING CHRIST


I just finished the game.

I'm probably still shellshocked from it, but this is probably the best example of excellent mature storytelling in a way that can only work in Videogames.

Its to soon to make big calls yet, as I need to do another playthrough to confirm, but this game is definitely shaking the throne of PS:T as best storyline in gaming.

Don't read about it before playing. Especially don't watch any youtube vids (which is always a stupid idea for games anyway). The game has the story masterfully wound up and it unravels brilliantly while you play. Even the loading screens are part of the mindgame.

Holy fsck, that game is good. Real good.

The closest comparison I can draw is Apocalypse Now. Only that the game is better.

While I sincerely doubt that, I'm convinced. It really sounds like a game I've been waiting for.

What are the chances of it being featured in the Steam sale, I wonder?

The game was released a week ago. The 50% off on Amazon are probably the best deal in the near future.

The game will, however, probably bomb pretty badly. The marketing is really bad and those who would really appreciate it will be put of by the "Modern Warfare Vibe" it has. And those MW kiddies probably won't have the maturity to appreciate the story. Heck, it was pure accident that I bought it. If I hadn't noticed that YAGER made this game, I wouldn't have looked twice at it.

So I guess at least around Christmas you can get it for 15$ on Steam.

Heck, it is even better than the book. Actually, it is as good as the book was when it was released. All the "present day significance" the book had a hundred years ago is updated to today with an added spin that is only possible in Videogames.

And apart from that, it is a pretty damn good shooter.

Ah, here comes the moral dilemma. I don't like circumventing regional restrictions, but $25 or €50?
I'd pay the €25 if Steam did that; any idea how long the Amazon deal is going to last?

Probably, yeah. But I don't want to be a part of that. I'm still mad at myself for not buying Alpha Protocol sooner after release than I did, and it seems this is going to be the same thing.

the game has gotten surprisingly good reviews, i didn't expect that.

but tbh the demo put me off almost completely. my impression was that the game is the most generic third-person military shooter ever made. from the characters (near-bald mid-30s military man) to the weapons (average selection of contemporary US and Russian firearms) to the setting (Middle East) to the language (all Oscar Mike, RTB and Watch Your Six!) and the gameplay (uninspired cover shooter with subpar gunplay and enemies appearing from out of nowhere).

i've hardly ever felt so let down by a demo. i'll pick it up in a Steam deal some time because apparently, the story is pretty good (even if it's probably the only thing "good" about the game), but i'm not going ot pay more than absolutely necessary for it.

it started off ridiculously, with you manning a Black Hawk minigun and shooting down Little Birds by the dozen in between skycrapers.
then you were on foot walking down columns of abandoned vehicles on a sandy highway, only to be ambushed by gunmen and then fighting your way through hordes of them to a crashed airplane, in seach of survivors.

Yeah, that's the first level.

It is actually pretty intelligently set up, which you will notice once you progress futher. The whole game is pretty much the deconstruction of the modern military shooter (and movie) genre. It does what PS:T did to the fantasy RPG genre back when it was the "CoD of its time". Hence the comparison.

But I actually liked the gunplay. I did play with a pad on the highest difficulty however. Limited ammo and the same health level as the mooks makes some pretty intense gunfights. There were sections I restarted 20+ times. Awesome game.
