I tried the demo. Will definitely put it on my "to buy" list.

In light of how this game turned out, I just realized how deeply creepy this part is vs. how I felt when I saw it, "BECAUSE YOU WANTED TO BE SOMETHING YOU'RE NOT!"

SimonG: HOLY JESUS FSCKING CHRIST

I just finished the game.

I'm probably still shellshocked from it, but this is probably the best example of excellent mature storytelling in a way that can only work in Videogames.

Its to soon to make big calls yet, as I need to do another playthrough to confirm, but this game is definitely shaking the throne of PS:T as best storyline in gaming.

Don't read about it before playing. Especially don't watch any youtube vids (which is always a stupid idea for games anyway). The game has the story masterfully wound up and it unravels brilliantly while you play. Even the loading screens are part of the mindgame.

Holy fsck, that game is good. Real good.

The closest comparison I can draw is Apocalypse Now. Only that the game is better.
Damn it, people... I really want to dismiss this game for flying the "pay attention to us because we have GRITTY MORAL DILEMMAS!" flag yet again, but the more I hear the more potentially fantastic it sounds.

So the story is great, apparently... is the gameplay any good?

No. But it's still worth playing once for the story, IMO. You have a right to be cautious of the "we have gritty moral dilemmas!" marketing, but in this game it is really well done and well written.

I look forward to trying it out, then. Now I just need to wait for a sale... or inexplicable financial security. -__-
The game is currently on sale on Amazon.com. 20$ and you get Bioshock 1 + 2 on top.

The gameplay is decent at worst, I don't think it's fair to say its bad or mediocre (as many people and reviewers are saying). It has all you can expect for a cover-based TPS to be "fun"; ie. the usual array of weapons (all with secondary fire), nice level design, above average visual design, the basic 4 or 5 types of enemies (normal, heavy, elite and melee, with normals also being able to be snipers or bazookas), obligatory mounted-gun or sniper sections (though many times the sniper rifle, or some other specific weapon - like one with a silencer - may just be copnveniently lying there and you can choose to use or not). And then the story, which is exceptionally paced and very well laid out and written. The best parts are the four or five where you can make a choice (sometimes you may not realize how many options there really are available at these points!) and as I already said the gradual shift in your appearance and psychological degradation is awesome.
The game has no been permanently reduced in price on Steam. It is now available for 20€ (unsure about the $ price).

I can't stress enough how important that game is to the currrent state of videogames.

As usual, steamprices to the rescue. €19.99, $29.99 or £19.99. Guess I will be picking it up at Christmas.
Oddly, the Russian edition is $20 too...
I thought the game was a bit crap tbh. Not a great shooter by any means and the story was very contrived.

I do remember one bit where there was a choice of who to execute, I chose the soldier as opposed to the guy that stole the water for his family and didnt notice any thing relevant story-wise for the "choice" I made, maybe there was by the end, but by then I just didnt give a shit due to boredom.

That's almost spoiler territory, mate. It actually is an important moment in the story, but you only learn that much later.

I'm incredibly torn between wanting to replay the game once again armed with knowledge of how the whole thing turns out in the end and not wanting to dilute the experience by going through it once more. One day, perhaps.

Maybe now you will get to be the hero?

I will still be a good person, in any case.
Rented it for two weeks, couldn't get into it. Amazing graphics engine, but the actual gameplay is somewhat generic. I felt like I was playing Gears of War 1.1.

I will give it another try down the line (lol), but it didn't grab me this time.
