Does STALKER count? I like STALKER.

Elmofongo: ah yeah, why would I need to shoot when my AI programed allies can do it.

SimonG: The game unique strength was (and still is, unsurpassed) the planning stage. You could meticulously plan every step of an entry operation with several teams acting simultaneously like clockwork. And then watch it like a real operator.

The shooting part itself was fairly interesting at best. If I wanted to play a shooter, Rainbow Six was a bad choice.
Hey man sometimes I kill enemies myself from time to time in Rainbow Six 3 PC (really want that game here in GOG)

I love SWAT 4 despite the idiocy of your teammates.

I love the early Rainbow Six/Ghost Recon games; I even loved Delta Force when it first came out.

To me, a game like COD is "look at our pretty scenery as you run from A to Z shooting anything that moves." Doesn't require a lot of thinking or strategy, especially if you get one of those "Here's your target!" arrows above someone's head.

I think patience has been removed from a lot of games. Run in with guns blazing, and if you die, try it again because everything will be in the exact same place.
I love Tactical Shooters but only when I play with friends. When I play alone they aren't fun anymore for me. But in coop they are amazing.

Planning stage was annoying... that's the main reason I played very few of them and none to completion.

Yeah. The only way I enjoyed them was in LAN where me and some friends just jumped in and started sneaking around killing every enemy we could see.

The planning stage is what makes it strategic, and its not that annoying at all it is suprisingly useful in my experiance in Rainbow Six 3 pc
I love tactical shooters. The whole reason I pick them is to emulate the tactics real troops would use. If I can get my character or a group of characters to successful take out a nest of terrorists holding up hostages in a hotel, that`s a real good feeling. tactical shooters like Rainbow six really took off after the success of real world Counter-terrorist like the Libyan thing in London. I would`ve thought it`d be just as popular today, but companies have really dumbed down these games so now you `pretend` you used real world tactics when you didn`t- at all.

Brothers in arms Earned in Blood is a little simpler but is a very good tactical shooter where you must think on the fly like the real guys do.

I also include the early Xcoms as a tactical (squad) shooter.

For me, I just feel good when I outwitted a tough enemy using brains.

It's just not my thing. I like turn-based strategy games and tactical RPGs but RTS games and tactical shooter planning has never lit my fire. I really liked Rainbow Six Vegas though, which was still somewhat tactical but toned down the planning and such.

Better Vegas then from what I have seen in Lockdown :P

SpirlaStairs: SWAT 4 is great too, although it was kind of frustrating having to start missions over every time I made even the slightest mistake.
Aye, it may have been frustrating, but it sure did cultivate some discipline: I had to patiently check every door with a camera stick, learn to quickly spot my enemies, and move through the level inch by inch, always careful not to expose myself out in the open. The squadmates were actually more frustrating, as they allowed criminals to shoot them far too often.
new updates on ground branch and takedown

From what I have seen takedown seems to be more like Rainbow Six with close quarters indoor combat (not all indoor mind you)

while Ground Branch is more akin to Ghost Recon with larger battlefields but still relying on infintry combat with the occasional enemy tank or helicopter.
It's too bad Ground Branch didn't get its funding. A far more worthy project than Crowdsourced Hardcore Tactical Shooter, imo.

I'm still waiting for Rainbow Six, Ghost Recon, SWAT 3 to go one sale since I am a cheapass. I played the Delta Force demo a lot back in the day, enjoyed it a lot, hope it is available on GOG one day.

Elmofongo: plus SHODAN and GLaDOS and EDI there to help aswell.
I think we've seen the end result of GlaDOS programming an AI. Wheatly isn't exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer, nor the most mentally stable ;-)

Except that she didn't program him.
